O'Rourke served as the U.S. representative for Texas's 16th congressional district from 2013 to 2019. Known as the punk rock Democrat Beto nearly unseated Republican Senator Ted Cruz losing by only 2.6%.
American freedoms are only as strong as their defenders, and far too many traditional centers of power are surrendering, @BetoORourke writes in an exclusive op-ed in the @HoustonChron.
But Texans are fighting back.

If we’re unable to organize politically, freely contest political decisions, peacefully and democratically vie for power, then we no longer live in a democracy. At that point, we’re once again subjects.
That’s why we’re fighting so hard for our rights.

We beat Paxton again in the 15th Court of Appeals. Turns out you can’t cancel the First Amendment just because you don’t like what your political opponent is saying.
“Democracy rarely dies in a single moment. It is chipped away via abdication: rationalizations and compromises as those with power and influence tell themselves that yielding just a little ground will keep them safe or that finding common ground with a disrupter is more practical than standing against him.
This is the enduring lesson of Weimar: extremism never triumphs on its own. It succeeds because others enable it—because of their ambition, because of their fear, or because they misjudge the dangers of small concessions. In the end, however, those who empower an autocrat often surrender not only their democracy but also the very influence they once hoped to preserve.”
The result of the President and Republican governors sending troops into cities against the will of both the leaders and citizens of those communities will be tragic.
What happens when civilians are unconstitutionally arrested and detained? What if someone is shot by a member of the Guard, either in an unfortunate accident or rush to judgement or by explicit orders of the President (former Def. Sec. Mark Esper says Trump asked him during his first term if he could use the military to shoot protestors. Esper said in an interview that Trump said "Can't you just shoot them? Just shoot them in the legs or something." And he's suggesting that that's what we should do, that we should bring in the troops and shoot the protesters.”)?
But that’s probably what they want. They will use the chaos they create and the resistance to authoritarianism that will naturally arise as pretext for their further defiance of the constitution and the rule of law. More consolidation of authoritarian power, more unconstitutional control of institutions (including elections).
We must peacefully, nonviolently resist this with everything we’ve got. Thank you to every mayor and governor, every American who is standing up against them. We need that fight right now.
BREAKING: The @SupremeCourt_TX has denied AG @KenPaxtonTX's petition to reverse the 15th COA's decision in his case against @BetoORourke over quorum break funding.
The 15th COA had put the brakes on discovery & delayed a hearing in the case against O'Rourke. #txlege
