Saint Louis IX ruled France from 1226-1270 and is one of the most revered Catholic monarchs — a model of Christian kingship, justice, and piety. He went on two Crusades, promoted justice and charity in his realm, and was canonized in 1297.

Have you ever noticed the twin torchbearers in the classic scene of Mithras slaying the bull? In the Cult of Mithras, these figures are named Cautes and Cautopates, and just like Gemini, they’re sometimes referred to as “The Starry Twins”.

These twins often frame or bookend the scene, and you generally see one holding a torch upward and the other downward. This reflects a central theme in twin mythology: contrasting or complementary energies. Exploring this through torch symbolism is particularly fitting given Gemini’s esoteric associations with summer, the sun and fire.

In fact, Gemini was sometimes seen not as brothers, but as two “fire sticks.” Curiously, torches are a type of fire stick. Their opposing directions, it has been said, suggest the rising and setting sun and/or the equinoxes. Speaking of the sun, let’s not forget that many classic versions of The Sun card show twins or two young brothers.

Lastly, in a scene where the bull is center stage, finding a reference to twin symbolism is fitting given Gemini’s close proximity to Taurus. Naturally, there’s a lot more that could be said about this.
