Are we optimizing robots for the wrong goal?

During a presentation I attended in Shenzhen, I saw a cross-domain robot capable of changing its physical form to adapt to different environments.

Right now, most attention is focused on humanoids: Who can replicate the human body, hands and intelligence most convincingly? Yet the repeated delays around Optimus also show just how difficult that engineering challenge really is.

Human compatibility clearly matters for our factories, homes, tools and infrastructure which were built around the human body.

But from my work with clients, I increasingly see that flexibility and safety matter more than strict adherence to a humanoid form factor.

Where a different or morphing morphology enables safer, faster and more reliable deployment than simply copying the human body, that could become the winning strategy.

Perhaps the future belongs not to the robot that looks most human, but to the one that fits best into human environments while remaining free to evolve beyond us.
