Gabrielle Union Buries Father’s Ashes at Cape Town Winery in Emotional Farewell
American actress Gabrielle Union has shared a deeply personal farewell to her late father, burying his ashes beneath the vines at Klein Goederust Wine Estate, a Black-owned winery near Cape Town.
Union's father, Sylvester "Cully" Union Jr., a U.S. military veteran, passed away on April 3, 2026, at the age of 81 following a lengthy battle with dementia.
In an emotional Instagram reel posted this week, the Bring It On and Being Mary Jane star revealed she returned to the estate where her family had previously planted vines and trees during a 2022 family trip to celebrate her 50th birthday and to lay her father to rest.
"Burying my dad's ashes at a winery in Cape Town, under the very vines we planted together as family just a few years ago," she captioned the post, adding a message of legacy: "May you nourish the earth the way you nourished us."
Klein Goederust, owned by Paul and Makhosazana Siguqa, has become a meaningful place for the Union family, who describe the owners as extended kin. The actress has long shown appreciation for South Africa and its Black-owned businesses.
Union, 53, has spoken openly about the profound heartbreak of losing her father and the slow toll of dementia on families. This latest gesture appears to mark a meaningful step in her grieving process.
Meet Vutlharhi Valoyi, the Limpopo-born founder of Zulzi — the online grocery delivery startup that secured R30 million in funding from a JSE-listed company. 🇿🇦📈
From humble beginnings to processing over 2,000 orders a day, Zulzi was already doing nearly R1 million in sales per day back in 2019. Their innovation would later help shape the development of Checkers Sixty60, now one of South Africa’s biggest delivery platforms. 🚀
Zulzi founder and CEO Vutlharhi “Donald” Valoyi played a major role in building the future of on-demand grocery delivery in South Africa.
Black child, it’s possible. Build. Innovate. Dream bigger. And let’s support our own. ✊🏾
When the traditional owners of capital are innovative and successful it’s all on them. When they don’t succeed or remain subscale, it’s always external factors
just a reminder that THAT single boy band is not the end of young jazz. We are rich in young jazz musicians in SA.

Colon (:) introduces something. You usually use it when what comes after is a list, or an explanation, or even a reveal.
An example is “she had one rule: never apologize” or “this is a list of things you should get from the market: eggs, tomatoes…”
It’s also used as the eyes in a smiley face :)
Semicolon (;) connects two complete thoughts that are related but could stand alone as separate sentences. It’s stronger than a comma but softer than a full stop.
An example is “Frank never apologized; he didn't think he was wrong”
It’s also used as the eyes in a winking face ;)
