@Miggysbat Hitting hard baseballs right at people and not evening out. It’s crazy. Seems like our BABIP has been incredibly unlucky all season. I’m afraid before it evens out it’ll be too late.
Wenceel Pérez news: He was struck in the face by a plyometric band in the training room after Tuesday's game during his typical postgame routine.
It was an accident.
He remains under evaluation. #Tigers
@anthonyfenech Of course. I was blogging during that period so had some connection to the team — but I enjoyed your work, especially this. Well done, hope you’re well.
The top half of this (not the draft stuff, because Yooper is way smarter than me when it comes to that and I roll with picks) is EXACTLY how I feel. No “I’m out,” because I have an eight year old son and six year old daughter falling in love with the game before my eyes.
I touched on this briefly two weeks ago on the @mcmbaseballpod podcast…but as the losses mount I have more thoughts.
I’m “a old”…I get it. But I try not to be a cranky old. I’ve seen plenty of bad Tigers ball clubs. But also been fortunate to see some incredible teams/players. In the end…it doesn’t really matter much…does it? It’s the game we love…but it’s still a game.
The idea of “I’m done with this team” is something I find amusing. I can’t do that. Maybe this makes me a bad “unserious” fan…but I have a readily available switch when times are tough. I can easily throw my expectations for the Tigers on the scrap heap and switch to just enjoying whatever modest success they have and monitor players I’m interested for positive developments.
I can easily switch to thinking about the draft. Following the minor leaguers more closely. I can put a “Seller” cap on before the deadline and put the “Buyer” hat in the closet.
Would I rather follow them in winning times? Obviously yes. But we don’t always get that as fans. The good news is it goes in cycles…good times will come back.
Maybe I’m more of a “baseball fan who likes the Tigers” more than “a Tigers fan”. It’s possible. I’ll own it if it’s true. (But I named my effin’ dog Sweet Lou…what more do you need?!?!)
I’m sitting here watching my son sleep in a hospital. He’s doing good. So I can’t get worked into a lather like others over Zack Short getting a couple of at-bats. Instead I’ll listen to the game this afternoon and hope he gets a big hit. I was excited he looked for a bit like he had the game-winning ribbie last night.
So let’s talk draft. Let’s create crazy Skubal trades scenarios. Let’s watch McGonigle evolve. Let’s hope Max Clark arrives this summer. Enjoy a win or two each week.
What I know is this…baseball is there for us every day in the Spring, Summer and Fall. The team might suck. But the experience of how you view it doesn’t need to suck too.
Colossal isn’t even a big enough word.
I’ve stepped back from my intense “know everything about the team” to just enjoy the game and this isn’t enjoyable.
But, I’ll tune in tomorrow bc still inside I feel like the tides will turn at some point. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Potentially the most “look at me,” uncle Rico post I’ve seen in a while. I’m so glad I don’t cover this team any more and just get to sit and watch, not deal with the know it all’s. Sheesh.
Hey Tiger fans… I’ll be on the Huge Show today from 3:25–5:00 PM.
Kevin McGonigle is a talented kid, but baseball is about adjustments over 162 games — not highlight clips and launch-angle graphics. The issue is the Tigers front office throwing basically $150 million at a kid they already control for six years. That’s what happens when GMs who never played the game think baseball works like every other sport. It doesn’t. Baseball is the toughest mental sport there is, and these front offices keep making idiotic decisions because they think projections and spreadsheets are reality.
Also… Colt Keith hasn’t had an RBI since May 3. SIXTEEN DAYS. And middle-of-the-order hitters have to PRODUCE. The setup adjustment helped him, but he still spins off too much and loses direction through the baseball.
I know EXACTLY what he’s doing wrong and I can fix it in seven minutes. It’s not complicated.
And what exactly are the 14 hitting instructors doing? This offense has scuffled since July of last year. That should NEVER happen at the big league level for this long of a time. These hitting instructors need to be held accountable because something is clearly wrong in that hitting room. At some point, people need to be shown the door because this ain’t working.
If you actually want to learn baseball and hear what’s REALLY going on instead of YouTube GM nonsense… tune into The Huge Show today from 3:25–5:00 PM. 🍿
