Andy Burnham choosing ‘Heart of Darkness’ as his favourite book might come off as a bold choice, given he’s surrounded by wokeist lefties, but actually it’s the response of someone who hasn’t read a book since university
That kind of reaction is exactly why no dialogue happened in 2018. We have to sit down and listen to both sides and find different solutions and I’m afraid one side can’t have it all. That includes your side. Trans people exist and have rights to transition in law and change gender. That has to be recognised.
@JoelTaylorhack Is it a particularly strong riposte?
One of the things contributing to my horror at the accelerating collapse in the power of centrist politics has been the eagerness of people previously considered thought leaders to brandish poor arguments - Not really any greater than memes
The worn-out columnist’s delusion: every mundane interaction proves their priors righteously proven …while simultaneously revealing to readers that, to the old white columnist, ordinary behaviour from a “big brown guy” is somehow remarkable
Just got on a full tube train at Warren Street. Big brown guy shot up out of his seat. Gestured at me. So I sat down. And wondered why that never happens to Reform supporters who come on here
An absolutely perfect example of progressive brain rot: western women are bigots for wanting women-only spaces, but Muslim men are celebrated for insisting on men-only spaces

The Sokoto Caliphate in Nigeria had as many slaves as the US and abolished slavery four decades later.
Why isn’t the Sokoto Caliphate a world economic power? Are they white supremacists?
@AFP Jihadists kidnapped and killed scores of people in an attack during Friday prayers in central Nigeria's Niger state, survivors and lawmakers told AFP Saturday, though some were able to escape during a clash with rival militants https://t.co/oUQKeF9FIn
"It should go without saying that Arday’s death is a terrible tragedy that no one should celebrate.
"At the same time, it is true to say that this tragedy was enabled by the psychological need among liberal elites for a black avatar of their guilt."
@coldxman on why the left needed to believe in Jason Arday's story.
Are you sure @hugorifkind that your interview with Carlo Rovelli, who was close to absurdist in his reasoning about what “defeat” means, wasn’t actually an interview with another Ravelli, this time Emanuel??
This is absolutely enraging. A shameless bully has apparently captured the police and is using them to bully and harass people. The officers, who appear to be some of the stupidest people alive, are assisting in their own befouling, pouring acid over the public trust.
It's 2026 and UK police forces are still obediently jumping to take orders from a deranged, violent man sacked from the police for gross misconduct and repeatedly arrested for harassment. https://t.co/NISQ5kpgDH
The Nigerian way is a Lipton tea bag brewed with sugar and milk powder in the cup, or evaporated milk from a can with two holes stabbed in the rim with a biro.
Extra points if you’ve got a plastic cup and half a loaf of sweet, soft, white bread
We’ll be indistinguishable from what used to be called “the third world”; unable to reform because the necessary basis of trust -between individuals, and the state and the individual- required for government to be effective has been utterly dissolved.
We’re going to cycle through a number of governments who get in on the promise of “just solving” problems, rough sleeping, house building, migration...
Every one will actually damage the social contract with chauvinist agendas instead of fixing the problems, and in 50 years
Alastair Campbell’s flat out denial of propositions put to him on that podcast, only to then back out of those arguments by saying he doesn’t know specifics, is the perfect demonstration of the working of the populist mind he claims to rail against @campbellclaret
Very sad that David Willey, who became BBC Rome correspondent in 1972 and never left, has died aged 93. He was an incredible authority on the Vatican, reporting and travelling with five Popes, and was so kind, giving me insight and encouragement when I started in Rome in 2019.
