We had a good discussion on the state of the economy and I shared with him that, whilst my perception is that the ongoing reforms are in the right direction and the economy is now stabilizing, there is a need to focus on building more social safety nets and growing the economy. I explained that Nigerians are experiencing hardship from the reforms and putting in place more programs to help people especially poor and vulnerable people manage the hardship is very important. At the same time it is necessary to start work on growing the economy to create more jobs and put money in people’s pockets. I am not going to waste my time explaining myself regarding the screenshot being circulated on this platform, where it’s claimed that I said I’m proud to be called an Islamic extremist. This isn’t about trying to convince you that it wasn’t what I meant or that I was taken out of context. Why? Because no matter how I explain it, you have already decided what you want to believe about me.

I am aware that many of you have labeled me as an extremist a very long time ago simply because I hold onto my beliefs firmly and unapologetically. So, the thing you should know is that if standing uncompromisingly in my faith makes you uncomfortable, so be it. There is absolutely nothing can be done about it.

The reason why this post is not a disclaimer is because I have consistently issued disclaimers and condemnations against terrorist activities in its entirety.

Islam unequivocally condemns terrorism and the killing of innocent people. Terrorism in whatever form contradicts Islamic principles of justice, mercy, and respect for human life. Those who engage in terrorism acts are not acting in accordance with Islamic teachings and will be held accountable both in this world and the hereafter.

The Quran explicitly emphasizes the sanctity of human life: “Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” (Quran 5:32)

Islam also categorically forbids spreading fear and chaos (fasad) in society, and terrorism is a form of corruption explicitly condemned in Islam.

The last thing I will do is fall into the blackmail trap set by some bigots and unidentified individuals. In my circle, both within and outside this country, I have several Christians, followers of other religions, and even those who don’t believe in any religion. If anyone deserves my explanation, it would be these individuals, and thank God they know me well enough that no explanation is necessary.

Lastly, I am a Muslim to the core and I so very much proud of my religion. I would appreciate it if you would respect that, and whatever the case may be, know that I will never dilute my commitment to please you or fit into your subjective definition of being 'liberal.' You can call me whatever you like, but my pride in my faith remains unshaken.
