The most driven and perceptive people I know in Gen Z weren’t built in comfort. They were shaped by broken homes, the slow erosion of something larger than themselves, and that quiet voice that says even your wins might not last. The hopelessness doesn’t fully leave; it just gets quieter for a while. Comfort in defeat breeds substance addiction, social isolation, etc…
If you’re functioning well in this generation, you usually come from one of two places you were raised with real stability and values, or you weren’t and decided early that you refused to repeat the pattern. The middle feels thinner than it used to.
Previous generations had their own chaos, zeitgeist, mythos, but they still moved inside a shared moral and spiritual language. We don’t. We’re standing at the point where that backbone is gone and we have to decide what, if anything, replaces it.
