Our last born called me sometime ago to say that his name was on the list of those going for NYSC..

I said my congratulations, happy that he will soon become a government pikin earning minimum wage.

The next thing he said made me hiss so loudly that my colleague at work asked me what's wrong..

"Bros they said my jamb registration number has been used by someone else"

"How is that possible?" I asked.

"I don't know." He replied. Obviously frustrated with the whole thing.

I dropped the call and went to the only place I was sure I could get the information I need.

I looked for the NYSC thread for corpers and started to read through over 50 pages of information..

People complained about the same issue in the past and they wrote about how they resolved it.

I called my brother back and told him to go to jamb office in owerri to complain.

He simply told me the student affairs officer suggested the same thing.

He went to jamb office, made some payments and the issue was sorted out.

He went back to the student affairs officer with some information from jamb and that was it.

Dude was in camp weeks ago..

This morning I learnt of someone who missed camping last month because of the same issue.

He had a nairaland account but wasn't aware that he could have gotten the information there.

They simply told him to wait for the next batch and he went home to sleep.

Today is Monday..

One of the dullest guy in my secondary school is a top photographer in the UK today.
He married a Caucasian women about two years ago, did a badass wedding, drives a Tesla and lives in a big house.
I know because I follow him on IG.
He doesn't reply my message even though we were besties in best brain.
I have another classmate, he was only good at math and I had to coach him in chemistry and physics for him to pass waec.
He got involved in a startup or something a few years into his undergraduate days, he's a multimillionaire today with multiple properties in the country.
Lastly, when I was in 300 level, there was a boy who always came to greet us in the compound, when I was moving house, I gifted him my rugs and items just to help him as he just got admission.
About 2 years later, this small boy was posting his house in lekki with bad BMWs.
As in terrible looking BMW's.
My point is people's life can change dramatically within a few years, months even.
Take a look at lobi, he used to be a nobody on X.
Now everyone wants to be him.

A society is not first built by its resources, but by its values. What a people tolerate, celebrate, or excuse will eventually define the boundaries of their progress.

One of the deep concerns within parts of African cultural expression today is not culture itself, but the distortion of culture. Culture, in its purest form, is meant to preserve identity, transmit wisdom, and uphold order. However, when culture becomes a shield for disorder, abuse, or injustice, it stops being heritage and becomes a hindrance.

It is troubling when symbols that are meant to represent ancestral honor and communal identity, such as masquerades, are used in ways that instill fear, intimidation, or even harm within the very communities they are meant to protect. Even more alarming is when harmful acts, including the violation of women, are excused or trivialized under the guise of “tradition.” At that point, culture is no longer being preserved, it is being corrupted.

A society that normalizes trauma cannot sustainably produce transformation. When people grow up in environments where fear, abuse, and injustice are embedded into daily life, it shapes their psychology, weakens their sense of dignity, and ultimately limits their capacity to build, trust, and innovate. Development is not only an economic or political process, it is deeply moral and psychological.

If we truly desire advancement, then there must be a courageous re-evaluation of what we call “culture.” Not everything inherited must be preserved. Culture must be refined, not just defended. Traditions that uphold dignity, community, and responsibility should be strengthened, while those that perpetuate harm must be confronted and reformed.

Progress begins when a people choose truth over tradition, justice over sentiment, and responsibility over silence. Until then, no matter the level of resources or potential, true development will remain constrained.
