A thread on the show Gravity Falls, conspiracy, and how to deal with the absurd. (Minimal spoilers)
The show follows Dipper and Mabel Pines, 12-year-old twins sent to live with their great-uncle (grunkle) Stan for the summer in the tiny Oregon town of Gravity Falls.
@IsabellaMWeber does amazing, important work. This thread outlines some really important work on profit-driven inflation, and is quite easy to follow even for non-economists like me!
Corporate concentration is a possible explanation of price and profit hikes driving inflation. But concentration was high before inflation. So, why can firms hike prices in an emergency? We explore this question in a new working paper. A 🧵https://t.co/ZWqkm5YFOn
Science is political, because it is done by humans with all their attendant biases. Insisting science is apolitical, and that acknowledging the biases inherent in the status quo *introduces* politics into science, is not helpful, and will only hamper scientific progress 🤷♀️
I love Capitalist, but listening to the episode on "Thinking Like an Economist" is especially great because we get to listen to @zingales get defensive as @epopppp challenges the epistemic authority of economists.

What I'm learning from the ChatGPT debates is that a lot of people dramatically underestimate the levels and types of intelligence that everyday people bring to their jobs. And I'm not sure what that means...
@STS_News @LeapingRobot @darchivist IDK that he discusses that phrase specifically, but he tracks the discourse from which it would have emerged. It doesn't differ too much from his other work, though, so it might not be what you're looking for.
