@Michael_RA@grantmp1 Freud's theory was similar. If you sought to say "sex is one motivator among many" he'd say "you only say that because you have repressed sexual desire." Self-verifying
@Michael_RA@grantmp1 Consider her point that these ideologies do not permit themselves to be gainsaid; this is what marks them as distinct sorts of moralities. They are self-verifying and built out of nothing except words, hence nihilism
@brianphillips Enjoyed this. Ironic that Nolan’s parable is so much less of a parable than Kubrick’s. Focusing on the blue flash instead of McCarthyism could’ve humanized the Manhattan Project much more
This point, about Nolan's restraint in Oppenheimer, was also my reaction. He repeatedly chose not to go rah-rah and instead to think about human costs and consequences
@jamespoulos other than your own work, whose philosophical treatment of trends in A.I. are most worth reading. My phil of tech syllabus needs an update
This is a great loss. Borgmann eagerly responded to email inquiries--even from undergraduate students from other schools! A true mensch and great thinker
Just learned that the philosopher Albert Borgmann passed away last night. RIP.
His work remains vital and it has been essential to my own thinking about technology.
