Unprecedented, this is the first time in Philippine politics that a sitting VP was issued a judicial arrest warrant. The immediate legal consequence may be limited if she posts bail, but the political consequences are obviously significant. First, it is significant precisely because of how rarely the coercive power of the law reaches people at the very top of Philippine politics. But it’s another question whether Filipinos will see this as a case of accountability or political persecution.
Second, the timing is inevitably politically charged. VP Sara has gone from administration ally to its principal political rival, and now faces a criminal case while an impeachment trial is already underway. It is reasonable, therefore, to scrutinize whether the tremendous powers of the executive are being used against a rival. But political rivalry cannot, by itself, invalidate legal process. Otherwise, every powerful politician could escape accountability simply by declaring themselves persecuted.
Third, the VP may not find it very easy to find refuge in public sentiment. In the July 2026 national survey of @momentumph_ , 80% of Filipinos said they found her grave threats against the President and his family unacceptable.
But, fourth, it should be easier for her to find support in home region of Mindanao. This latest development gives the Duterte camp another powerful resource: a narrative of persecution. Rodrigo Duterte in The Hague, Sara Duterte impeached and now facing arrest. This may be sold to the public as one sustained campaign to eliminate the Dutertes from national politics. So while this narrative may not expand Sara Duterte’s national coalition, it can definitely keep her core constituency in Mindanao intact, mobilized, and consolidated heading into 2028. Political persecution is a particularly powerful story.
And lastly, one wonders how this may turn into a political danger for the Marcos camp. A legal process perceived as selective or politically directed could easily turn into political capital and give their rivals’ base another reason to close ranks.
Eto ang ayaw i-play ng defense at ni Chiz sa korte. Hindi enough na basahin lang ang TSN because in this video, it is very important how Cong. Flores asked and how Atty. Poa answered the questions.
KAPUNAN ON 'ABOGADONG WALANG ALAM': THERE WAS NO INSINUATION
House private prosecutor Lorna Kapunan clarified that co-counsel Benjamin Tolosa's remark describing hostile witness Atty. Michael Poa as an "abogadong walang alam" was simply a direct translation of having "no personal knowledge."
During an ambush interview on Wednesday, Kapunan also described the tense exchange between Tolosa and defense lead counsel Sheila Sison as "tame."
"It's normal to us lawyers. Remember, hindi lang tatlo ang lawyers du'n. Lahat kami lawyers. Tame nga 'yun eh," she added. | @ronahamparo
