This weekend is the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden during WWII
A throwback to ten years ago where Visit Holland and @lre_foundation invited us to learn about what happened
We start in the fields where allied troops parachuted in, "It's a historical area.. When the parachuters landed they walked over to meet the resistance"
We visit the spot where the Nazis had huge batman-style lights which they used to light up planes flying in
A the National Liberation Museum which tells the story of Market Garden, "A woman who lived in the area said she was married in a wedding dress with a Star of David on it, but, they weren't allowed to marry in the town hall, they had to marry in the zoo.. This was the psychology of the Nazis, dehumanising the Jews before they were sent to the concentration camp"
We visit, 'The Bridge Too Far' - John Frost Bridge. "It was the bridge that the allies couldn't take during market garden.. It was a disaster.. The British fought for more than a week, trying to capture it from the Nazis, but they didn't succeed"
At one of the cemeteries, "At the last battle of Arnhem, hundreds of British soldiers were found in the streest and the woods.. To honour them they were given a place at the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.. The soldiers were buried in the order they were found"
Dutch man who was 14 years old during the Battle of Arnhem, "Over 8 days of the battle I saw a lot of things.. We tried to to escape.. It failed.. My dad was missing during the battle.. We were chased out of Oosterbeek at gunpoint by the Nazis.. We spent 10 months outside the city"
"In June 1945 we were finally allowed to return to Oosterbeek. We found it damaged.. We managed to rebuild it"
"We are obliged to do everything in our capacity to avoid, to prevent another war happening.. War is just a terrible thing for civilians and for military"
80 years since D-Day.
80 years since the largest seaborne invasion in history.
80 years since the heroic efforts of those who landed on the beaches of Normandy to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny.
80 years of peace in Western Europe since.
Today we say thank you.
#DDay80
