Why this negative reaction to Germany's AfD party? I thought I'd write up an answer.

#1 It's actually extreme
The party platform doesn't seem that extreme (mostly). It even calls for things I might agree with, such as banning government crypto backdoors. But that's just putting lipstick on a pig. The party leaders regularly give speeches that are more extreme. They regularly excuse Nazis or deny the Holocaust. Many leaders have links to neo Nazi groups

#2 It's racist
It's anti-Muslim, anti brown-people. It's not simply that it wants to close the borders to new immigration, it wants to make current legal immigrants second-hand citizens. It wants to reconstruct the German education system to teach children the superiority of the German people.

#3 It's populist
Over time, our liberal democratic institutions corrode and need reform. Good political parties are "reform" parties, who want to fix those institutions. Bad political parties are extremist "populist" parties, who want to destroy those institutions, and almost always, end up replacing them with Strong Man rule.
Extreme populism exists on the left-wing and right-wing.

Elon Musk has adopted far-right extremism, so he sees these things as more reasonable.
