@briiiannabrooks@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER Your point makes me wonder the direction this story would have taken if he had never done the paper route. When would he become more confident in himself? Would he ever meet Mr. Spiro? What would be different?
@hurstthailey@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER Young me could definitely relate to doing something I didn't want to do to make my parent happy because they thought it would make me happy. Can anyone else relate?
@lizamae99 @JoyceGulley@VVAWTER This is a really sweet and real moment we got to see. You can tell how much he's grown in one summer. It shows how important it is for children to have supportive, caring adults in their life.
@H_Haleigh07@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER What a great quote! The words we say will disappear, but what we write is never erased. This is a good lesson to teach students about social media. Our words have an impact; we must choose them wisely.
@AbbeyD315@VVAWTER@JoyceGulley I like this quote because I think we can all remember a time when we discovered something new in a city that we thought held no more surprises. Living in Evansville my whole life has given me that experience quite a few times.
@JoyceGulley The religious parts of this book are there to give us a look into the characters and their morals. If religion is an important aspect of someone's character, then it deserves to be shared. I could only see the other side to this argument if the book were preaching, but it's not.
@evans_kar@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER Thanks! Mr. Vawter pointed out that my theory wasn't his exact intention, but I think it's interesting nonetheless. I think even though it wasn't what he intended, there is still something there to be looked at. I love literature for that reason - it's open to interpretation! :)
@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER#paperboypart3 I have a theory about what the four words represent that Mr. Spiro gives Victor. Mr. Spiro refers to Victor finding his "golden fleece" which is a reference to a story in Greek mythology where Jason is sent on a quest to retrieve the (1/3)
@haallleeeeee@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER I love audio books because how someone else reads it is usually different than how I would read it. Having the physical copy too is nice though because I like looking at how they structure the pages and being able to find specific quotes. I prefer having both when reading :)
@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER "MAM'S A PEACOCK" (Pg. 151) Had me actually laughing our loud when I heard that on the audio version! That was just the comic relief I needed. π #paperboypart2
to Victor represent those people who helped him in his journey in which he learns about himself and the world. STUDENT: Mr. Spiro/Victor? - SERVER: Mam - SEEKER: Ara T - SELLER: Rat.
I'm sure the Greek myth has something to do with it, but I'd love other thoughts! (3/3)
golden fleece and claim the throne in Thessaly. In his journey for the fleece, he brings along several people who help him fulfill his quest and change him as a person. Through the novel, Victor has a few people in his life who do something similar. The four words given (2/3)
@PflugAlexis @RebeccaKazmier3 @JoyceGulley@VVAWTER I think that's a big message in this book. You can never know someone's thoughts and feelings without getting to know them. We all have our own differences that others can easily judge. If we could only learn to hold off on judgments, we might get a lot more done in the world.
@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER (pg. 220) "My soul doesn't stutter". This one line I think can beautifully describe how Victor has changed throughout the novel and the confidence he now has gained. Other people may not see his soul, but he can clearly and he's happy with it. #paperboypart3
@graceherzog5@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER like a stuffed animal. Perhaps an allusion to another literary work. If that isn't it, maybe it's referencing Vengeful Heart (Vietnamese movie). Or, more likely, just a writing choice by the author? I don't know but I had fun sleuthing! π (2/2)
@graceherzog5@JoyceGulley@VVAWTER I did some digging and came up with a theory that most likely isn't right, but is interesting nonetheless! There is a book called The Vengeful Heart that examines murder crimes. Little Man is so heated over who could have hurt Mam that he feels like he's going to bust open (1/2)
@hannah_scott16@VVAWTER@JoyceGulley I also saw the connection between how he judged TV boy without knowing his full story just like when Little Man can't get words out people assume he's dumb. I feel like there's a mini lesson here that you shouldn't judge someone before you get to know them.
@PflugAlexis@VVAWTER@JoyceGulley I've been going between listening to the audio book to reading the physical copy, and I have to say that after hearing it, I find it easier to follow the text since I understand the flow a little better.
