I really dislike that Mansa Musa has been reduced to being popularly known as the richest man in history. Not only is there no way to confirm this, but it overshadows other aspects of his legacy, such as his role in laying the foundation for turning Timbuktu into an important center for intellectual activity.

Mali was also notable for its social organization as well. Ibn Battuta recorded that crime was very rare in Mali. To me, these things are more impressive than Mansa Musa's individual wealth because they demonstrate his achievements as a political leader.
