From vaccine success story to massive measles outbreak
Prior to this outbreak, Bangladesh was making progress toward eliminating measles with its robust, community-led vaccine program and was held up as a model for lower resource counties.
In 2019, then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed received The Vaccine Hero Award from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance in recognition of the country's "tremendous strides."
Then came 2024.
The long-time regime was ousted and an interim government took charge. During its 18 months in power, the temporary leaders decided to revamp the vaccination system. The new plan did not go smoothly.
There were bureaucratic delays. Soon, the country's vaccine supply was disrupted. The shots became unavailable; immunization campaigns were postponed.
This did not go unnoticed. Rana Flowers — the @UNICEF representative to Bangladesh – said in a press conference on May 20 that she had repeatedly warned the government over the past two years that the delays could trigger a crisis. "I sat with the interim adviser and the staff on at least 10 occasions saying, 'We are worried. Look at my face. I am worried. You're going to face a mountain,' " recounted Flowers.
Other groups — including the @WHO and @gavi — also publicly urged the government last year to take action!

Bangladesh’s measles outbreak is now one of the deadliest public health crises in decades
----
More than 500 suspected and confirmed child deaths have already been reported. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Thousands of children remain at risk — especially those without full vaccination coverage.
Health officials say over 62,000 suspected cases have been identified nationwide since March. This is not just a statistic. These are children, families, and futures being lost.
Vaccination gaps, weak healthcare access, and delayed responses have turned a preventable disease into a national emergency.
Every child deserves protection. Every preventable death is a failure humanity must confront.

Overnight Ballots, Empty Polling Stations — Is This an Election or a Takeover?
No voters. No transparency. No democracy.
In Ward 43 of Dhaka-6, the Jubilee School and College polling centre was reportedly occupied in advance. While citizens remain absent, ballot papers are allegedly being stamped and boxes filled under the cover of darkness.
This is not democratic participation — this is control.
Reports suggest polling stations are being seized before voting begins, with “overnight votes” cast without public presence. The silence of the administration only deepens concerns that the outcome is being engineered rather than earned.
When ballots are stamped without voters, democracy becomes a performance — not a process.
If this model spreads nationwide, the implications are clear:
⚠️ Occupied polling stations
⚠️ Voterless ballot stuffing
⚠️ Administrative inaction
An election without voters is not an election — it is a warning.

My interview with @Bloomberg:
This election isn’t just about who wins seats. It’s about the future of democratic participation, political voice, and stability in one of South Asia’s most dynamic nations.
Thursday's election won't resolve the country's instability and the result will always be questionable.

Asked about the uprising in Bangladesh that ousted his mother, Sajeed Wazeb, the son of Sheikh Hasina, says the Awami League 'mishandled the protests'.
I ask: is mishandled too mild a term to describe hundreds of protestors killed on his mother's instructions?

Bangladesh: Release Anis Alamgir now!
The arrest of the journalist in Bangladesh who was detained on 15 December under the Anti-Terrorism Act continues an alarming trend of individuals being targeted for being perceived to support the now banned Awami League.
