But concerning our current reality in Nigeria, I believe we need to look closely at the Silver Nisab too.

Today, Silver Nisab is roughly 1.55 million as opposed the 15.3 million for the Gold Nisab. This difference leaves a wide gap.

I can’t imagine someone sitting on 7 million Naira for a whole year and claiming they do not qualify to pay Zakat in this economy. That defeats the core purpose of wealth distribution.

Even though we can choose between the gold and silver standard, major classical scholars, more importantly, Imam Abu Hanifa, ruled that wealth should be evaluated against whichever Nisab is reached first. I concur greatly with this. Many contemporary scholars such as Mufti Taqi Usmani also hold this view.

They base this on a clear jurisprudential principle that says:

الانفع للفقراء
"that which is most beneficial to the poor."

Using the Silver Nisab brings the threshold down. It allows wealth to circulate and reach the needy a lot faster.

The goal of Zakat is to clean your wealth and uplift the community. If you have > 2 million sitting idle for a year, it is better to use the silver standard, calculate your dues, and purify your wealth.

This I believe serves the purpose of Zakat faster and better.
