“A ‘crisis' in GTA school staffing shortages is leading to cancelled classes, burnout & mounting pressures.”

"60 Minutes" and CNN journalist, and host of the podcast "All There Is with Anderson Cooper," talks about the propensity among many people to bury their grief over lost loved ones in silence, and how hiding one's grief can inflict an additional burden. https://t.co/SufoboAqzR
This is something: an article in the Journal of Pediatric Medicine makes the case that the rise in anxiety and depression in children and youth is linked to the severe (and relatively recent) curtailing of independence.
Roaming, making choices, getting into a little trouble, it turns out, is a necessary part of growing up. When you take this away, children become unable to navigate the ebbs and flows of the real world. I made this argument in my TED talk a decade ago about the importance of walking to school - arguing that walking to school is not frivolous, but rather critical, to childhood.
Another blow against cities designed for driving.
“Our thesis is that a primary cause of the rise in mental disorders is a decline over decades in opportunities for children and teens to play, roam, and engage in other activities independent of direct oversight and control by adults.”

Ontario’s Auditor General says the province doesn’t have a strategy to reduce its reliance on agency nurses.
Hospitals have increased reliance by 25 per cent and agency nurses are being paid 2-3x higher than hospital.

.@BonnieCrombie has pledged to axe the annual standardized tests in reading, writing & math, and return to a one-year teaching degree to help get more teachers into classrooms. She would put an end to the mandatory two online credits in high school. #onted

I've had several replies to my last post about my partner's impossible #Alberta classroom size of 35 & 37 students saying "So what? It was like that when I was growing up"
Yes. Teachers know that. We know that. The Millenials and Gen X of this province remember this

“De-streaming is a significant shift in the way we teach students in Grade 9. We need ongoing support from the Ministry around reducing & maintaining smaller class sizes."
Despite the increased need for smaller class sizes when de-streaming, more and more #OntEd schools say they are unable to lower class sizes 🤨
The Ford gov't is not making the necessary investments to ensure de-streaming is a success for students!

SPECIAL REPORT: New survey results from @PeopleforEd show that the vast majority of schools in Ontario do not have the necessary supports & resources needed to properly implement de-streaming!
De-streaming has been a priority for years, as many reports have shown that streaming students in grades 9 & 10 disproportionately disadvantages Black students, Indigenous students, students w/ special needs & disabilities, & students from lower income families.
Yet, only 20% of #OntEd high school principals say they have enough support to implement de-streaming. And 53% disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement “My school staff and I have received sufficient support from the Ministry and my school board to implement de-streaming.”

Destreaming requires funding. In @PeelSchools, Applied courses used to have a cap of 22 students. Now they don't exist. Why aren't destreamed courses being run with the same class cap as applied courses?
