A monk was shot and killed by junta troops during a military operation in the Dawei Special Economic Zone deep-sea port area in Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region. The killing reportedly took place around July 15, during the second week of the junta’s military operation in villages surrounding the Dawei SEZ.

The monk had lived for several years at Kone Thayar Inn Monastery, also known locally as Kone Yet Inn Monastery, in Yebyu Township. Local residents said he was around 40 years old and was not originally from the area.

“The monk was not from this area, but he had lived at the monastery since becoming a monk. The soldiers forced him to disrobe and put on civilian clothes before shooting him. They buried his body inside the monastery compound,” a local resident said.

After the military column left the area, villagers recovered the monk’s body and reburied him at a cemetery.

Since July 9, junta troops have carried out prolonged military operations across villages surrounding the Dawei deep-sea port area in Yebyu Township and neighbouring Launglon Township. Local reports indicate that at least six people were killed during these operations, including the monk, three young members of the Ants Tanintharyi humanitarian group, another local resident, and 16-year-old Wai Yan Phyo.

On July 28, part of the military column moved from the Dawei SEZ into northern Launglon Township. Wai Yan Phyo, a resident of Myo Haung Village, was shot and killed after encountering the soldiers. Junta troops also burned two civilian homes and a community clinic in Aye Ka Ni Village.

Military units remain active in the Dawei SEZ area. Thousands of residents from Aye Ka Ni, Wea Kyun, Lal Shaung, Kone Yet Inn, Myo Haung, Pein Shaung, and surrounding villages have been forced to flee their homes.

Displaced families are now sheltering under extremely difficult conditions during the rainy season. Children and older people are becoming ill, while many families urgently need food, medicine, tarpaulins, and other basic shelter materials.

Junta troops have blocked roads and established security checkpoints throughout the area, making it increasingly difficult for local charities and civil society organizations to deliver humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

The Thai government should press for the restoration of democratic rule, engage Myanmar's democratic actors, and increase pressure for accountability for the junta's atrocity crimes.
