‼️: Using "Chutia" as a derogatory remark in Assam might land you in jail. Here’s why?
The Assam government is considering to introduce a law in the assembly to protect the identity and dignity of the Chutia community in the state.
The initiative has been contemplated to draw a clear boundary of the terminological use of the word "Chutia" whose meaning differs in Assam and the Hindi heartland of the country.
'Chutiya' is a popular Hindi or Urdu derogatory word used to call someone stupid or an idiot. The term is widely used in a mildly offensive manner.
On the other hand, 'Chutia', pronounced Sutiya, is a native ethnic group of Assam that is historically associated with the Chutia Kingdom. They comprise one of the core groups of Assamese people.
According to one of the several other theories, "Chutia" is derived from the word "Chutiya," which means "a hill" in the local Assamese language.
Due to the similar pronunciation of both terms, the Chutia community is often exposed to a range of mockery and taunting about their surname. Time and again, they are ridiculed for their identities.
Further, considering such instances, earlier Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave his assurance to solve the dichotomy of the term through a law. This has been much anticipated by the members of the Chutia community.
