Water Security: It is a no-brainer that coal mining is water intensive. It also comes with the added problem of dumping dirty water. A reservoir was constructed in Gorana for this purpose. The untreated water has become a pollution menace, poisoning the groundwater in the area.

Public Health: Secondly, over the last 3 years Thar has witnessed a drastic surge in suicide cases, making it the district with the second highest suicide rates in Pakistan. The latter’s link to recent development patterns cannot be ignored.

Dispossession: 80%-100% of the communities from 10 villages were displaced for Blocks I & II; no actual public hearings before acquisition; resettlement is a farce - Senhri Dars offered no real ownership to the displaced & is already under threat of displacement by the companies.

Dispossession: It has resulted in involuntary displacement & restrictions in land-use, particularly communal grazing lands. From little state involvement in matters of land to now - a colonial law was used to acquire land for ‘public purpose’ that is in fact for private profit.
