In November, Amazon used an AI tool to dub English voice tracks for multiple Japanese anime series on Prime Video. The move was met with anger and ridicule. Fans called the dubs “soulless” and “embarrassing,” and the company quietly removed them days later.
For filmmaker and actor Justine Bateman, the incident was an example of how tech companies are increasingly using AI for storytelling—and making it worse in the process.
For the past several years, Bateman, 60, has been one of the leaders of an anti-AI resistance in Hollywood. She has a computer science degree and served as an adviser to the Screen Actors Guild during their 2023 contract negotiations, helping secure protections including a requirement for producers to get actors’ consent to use their likenesses for AI.
In what amounts to a survey of the battlefield, TIME spoke to a broad array of AI skeptics, including Bateman. Read their stories here: https://t.co/LwAHpVCnCI

I'm so happy AI is dying.
Not the idea itself, just the current iteration being shoved down our throats by the same people who Sweet Baby Inc and Planned Obsolescence and CNN us over and over again.
AI's not ready, but they're pushing it to market to be a loss leader.
Over us.
All AI has done for YouTube is create mind melting garbage to trick kids & the elderly, added worthless features no one asked for, & allowed deepfake videos of creators doing anything from crime to porn. I hate that there’s enough money behind it to make them act like it’s good.
YouTube is starting to suck a bit too much for me. Can't see me continuing to pay for premium much longer if they keep this up.
What are you favorite youtube alternatives? Maybe we just start our own economy without all the fuckwits.
These are not real humans.
Yes you read that right.
These are AI avatars running 24/7 TikTok livestreams, promoting products to an audience that has no idea they are watching a fake person.
We are drowning in a sea of algorithmic slop.
Welcome to the simulation.
TIME copied this iconic photo of the workers who built our cities to crown the tech billionaires who are using AI to decimate and destroy the working class.
Humanity will adjust and transcend. As we’ve always done.
Photography didn’t eliminate painters. We can even say it added premium to the maestros.
Sampled beats failed to eliminate the need for drummers.
Machine-made embroidery and art has less value than hand-made art.
A massage chair can never ever replicate the experienced touch of a properly trained masseuse.
Handwritten letters are more valuable now than it would’ve been, had typewriters (and eventually, printers) not been invented.
Technology can cover for the masses but the additional value given to man made creations make the price much higher, and at the very end, it evens out.
All this does is create a better filter for greatness. Man always transcends. You cannot fake the soul.
We’ll adjust for a bit, may take a while, but we will adjust. And prevail. 🤍
