PRACTICAL ART: I first encountered kinetic art at Tsukuba University via my sculpture professor Morio Shinoda. It was a space where my computational training suddenly made sense as living in 3D and 4D, not just 2D. But the mid-century kineticists faced a hard truth: their pieces needed constant hands-on servicing, and many gave up. It's the practical reason I had chosen, at the time, to mostly make things for the computer instead of the physical world.
In the summer of 2008, Olafur Eliasson raised four waterfalls out of the East River in NY: scaffolding towers up to a hundred and twenty feet tall, pumping the river up and over to let it fall back into itself. The machinery and structure were not hidden. A waterfall in the city, he insisted, could be felt as a natural phenomenon and to be a cultural one at the same time. Not having had a chance to experience it, I was glad to recreate it in the spirit of summer. —JM
