What you’re doing here is a sleight of hand. Just because transformers are used in both fields doesn’t mean the distinction has dissolved as you claim. If essentially a token predictor and something that is specifically trained on discreet data sets to identify tumors are the same because some of the pieces of the underlying technology are the same, then instagram and an aircraft control system are “the same” because they both run on computers. Absurd.

The entire fucking point is that “AI” has become this blanket umbrella term for a bunch of wildly different shit that has wildly different use cases. I never argued that “transformers bad”. I said that ChatGPT slop generation is distinct from these deep learning models because they quite obviously have among other things different social consequences and uses. And we clearly wouldn’t be building a fuckton of data centers right now if the primary use case for “AI” was biomedical research. The “data center in everyone’s backyard” movement is specifically an arms race to train massive general purpose models that put generative AI into literally everything. The idea that we can’t invest in one without the other is ludicrous on its face and the downstream deliterious effects of generative AI for public consumption are clear.
