My bank has been trying to get me to take some sort of credit card for a few months now and the other day I decided to try it out and I was so shocked. I have the option to repay in full after 30 days or in 3 monthly installments at 0 interest or with interest for a year.

Obviously I will be charged if I miss payments. I haven't read the fine print so I don't know how bad that is. But it's just one of those things that shows me how sucky getting credit in Kenya is.

About halfway through the flight, the captain came over the intercom and said, “Good news, everyone.”

“We’re expected to arrive about 50 minutes early.” I looked at my boarding pass. Then looked out the window.

Then I looked at the guy sitting next to me. I whispered, “How?” He shrugged.

“Maybe we caught a good tailwind.” I wasn’t convinced. For the rest of the flight, I became completely convinced pilots had secret shortcuts they just didn’t tell passengers about.

Like… “Traffic looks bad over Tennessee.” “Let’s cut through Kentucky.”

When we landed, curiosity got the better of me. I stopped to thank the captain as I got off the plane. Then I asked,

“I have to know…” “How do you save almost an hour?” He smiled.

Maybe it was just an off day but on Thursday it took me almost one and a half hours to get home from town. When I worked in town last year it used to take me about 45 minutes. I probably shouldn't jump to conclusions but I am genuinely concerned.

half of being a local is the relationships you develop with people at your local spots that you frequent. you’re not going to replicate the local experience as a tourist just because you went to an unassuming bagel shop instead of a well-known one. and that’s fine. the obsession TOURISTS have with the whole “i’m not like other tourists” mindset is so annoying. it’s fine to just be a tourist! being a tourist is so fun!

i once went to amsterdam with someone who was obsessed with not being a tourist so we spent all day riding bikes around residential neighborhoods and never went to the van gogh museum or anne frank house. miserable way to travel
