Today marks 1 year since the passing of Jorge Bergoglio. He’s no longer here, but he remains in people’s hearts 🕊️✨
Thanks to Asociación Miserando and all the teams bringing his values back to the streets.
Top Social had the honor of being part of this alongside Padre Guilherme
I’m here in Busan, South Korea with @Greenpeace and poet and author #NikitaGill supporting a strong #PlasticsTreaty that cuts plastic production and put our planet 🌎 before the fossil fuel industry!
Alongside @Greenpeace & @brkfreeplastic we shared the call of more than 2.9 million people around the world for a strong binding #PlasticsTreaty.
On behalf of our supporters, Nikita Gill, Hannah Kim & Jeah Han raised their voices to call on govts to end plastic pollution. #INC5
This is bad news for my country. As I said to The @Guardian: Buenos Aires' decision to leave the Baku talks is a sharp departure from its climate policy, "not a surprise under Milei’s government, who have pressured Argentine diplomats to take untenable positions in the past."
Honored to be in a such a exciting panel to discuss an issue often overlooked: the role of keystone species in the healing of our Planet. It's urgent for this #COP16 to pay more attention to them, and learn from them. More research is needed to understand and value their role.
Ahead of the @UNBiodiversity talks in Cali, our team at Common has written this briefing for journalists covering #COP16. It provides a breakdown of the main negotiation topics & insights into why COP16 is a moment of reckoning: https://t.co/97QWbiWu6y #Biodiversity#CBD
During the #SummitOfTheFuture process, we felt as if we were a team of time travelers that landed in a dystopian present. Here our take of the #SotF: https://t.co/E0za3KgAL2 BTW, why was #OurCommonFuture, the title of the 1987 Brundtland Report, chosen as the current slogan?
Proud to support the @PlanetaryGdns with research and technical assistance in their policy efforts to advance the adoption of the #PlanetaryBoundaries concept to address the ecological crisis. Thank you for your thought leadership. Wishing you all the best during #ClimateWeek!
The growing call for the immediate release of Paul Watson, unjustly imprisoned in Greenland, has reached New York! These trucks have been all over the east side of midtown Manhattan (even near the UN Mission of @Denmark_NY). Denmark’s @Statsmin Mette Frederiksen: #FreePaulWatson
The growing call for the immediate release of Paul Watson, unjustly imprisoned in Greenland, has reached New York! These trucks have been all over the east side of midtown Manhattan (the UN area). Denmark’s @Statsmin Mette Frederiksen: with all due respect, #FreePaulWatson
This is deeply disturbing for any activist. Paul Watson appeared in Court in Nuuk, Greenland today after nearly a month of incarceration at Anstalten Detention Center, one of the most remote prisons on Earth.
The Greenlandic Judge has ruled that Watson is a flight risk, meaning he will remain detained until September 5th while the Danish Ministry of Justice reviews the case. Alarmingly, Watson’s legal team was barred from presenting evidence to counter the allegations from Japan, as the judge focused solely on the extradition request rather than the merit of the charges themselves.
This situation stems from politically motivated claims made by Japan in 2010, following Watson and his crew’s courageous efforts to confront illegal whaling operations in Antarctica. Denied the basic right to defend himself with evidence, Watson has been subjected to degrading treatment more fitting for a convicted criminal than a man who has yet to have his day in court.
But this case is about more than just Paul Watson. If he is extradited to Japan, it could set a chilling precedent for activists around the world. It signals that governments can use politically motivated charges to silence those who stand up for justice, making it easier to target and punish activists who dare to challenge powerful interests.
This isn’t just an attack on one man—it’s an attack on the right of all activists to fight for their causes without fear of persecution. If Watson is extradited, it will embolden those who seek to suppress dissent, undermine human rights, and crush movements for environmental and social justice.
No matter whether Paul's activism is your cup of tea or not: now more than ever, Paul needs your support. Share and write to the Ministry of Justice directly, urging them to intervene and expedite the conclusion of this case to prevent further injustice. More here:
The window for real ambition at the #INC4 Global #PlasticsTreaty negotiations is closing. As a former Greenpeace colleague, I'm asking to you @s_guilbeault: will you do the right thing and lead without incrementalism? What will be your legacy as Canada's environmental minister?

As industry is on track to triple plastic production by 2050, a new opinion poll shows people overwhelmingly want less new plastic.
