I was really excited for this one, and Sakurai’s passion was infectious.
But no matter how much I tried to like it, it was a disappointing game. The core loop is extremely unsatisfying. Aside from the visual charm, there isn’t much more there.

“He struck me as completely amoral. I’d never met anyone who was so totally amoral. I mean, I liked him personally, it’s just that I couldn’t make sense of him. It’s as if he was from a different species, or something.” - Chomsky, commenting on Foucault after their 1971 debate.
I really like Atlus games. For the music, art direction, UI design, story, but rarely for the gameplay, and always despite the pacing.
And that’s why Catherine was the perfect Atlus game for me.
I think nowadays pacing is underappreciated. There's YT videos that are longer than the thing they're reviewing. ATLUS makes RPGs where you don't start the first dungeon until you're over three hours in. But if you say it's a waste of time you get called the idiot.
