As a supporter of all the “middle aged guys” in the jocks room, this makes me sad. @coreylanerie is a very, very good rider & nice guy who won a stake for us (@CJThoroughbreds) at @ChurchillDowns on Keep It Easy & rode Mesero to my first win at @keeneland I wish him the best in his next chapter.
Stop arming your irons and wedges.
Get your hands connected to your body by finishing with knees together and thighs touching. All good players do it.

A Few Oaks Day (Friday) Thoughts
▶️Race 4 – MSW F&M 3^ 7f.
Couplet, a Gun Runner filly making her debut, shows a pleasing workout line, and it's nice to see Juddmonte supporting Michael McCarthy.
All but one of the 13 runners (Power to Glory) are due to be treated with Lasix, despite there being five first-starters, and it being doubtful that more than a tiny percentage, if any, are serious bleeders.
▶️Race 5 – MSW 3^ 8f. Turf
While cases could be made for a good number of lightly races horses in the field, I'm going to take a look at a seemingly improbable winner (pun intended), Hill Country. 50/1 on the morning line, and breaking from the far outside post, his only start to date was in a $50,000 Maiden Claiming race on dirt at Keenelend, in which he finished with interest, as they say.
He gave me the impression, watching the replay, of a horse that wasn't moving like a natural dirt horse, and I suspect that he might benefit from a surface switch. His pedigree is interesting in that his sire, Improbable, while a dirt horse himself, was by City Zip, a strong turf influence. And while Improbable sadly died prematurely, he did get some turf runners, including Governor Sam, a Graded stakes winner on turf at Saratoga, Forum, a maiden breaker on turf over the Churchill course, and Faber, a Woodbine turf winner.
Hill Country's dam, Maggie d'Oro, also produced Blue Sky baby, which won a MSW and placed in a Listed stakes over the Santa Anita turf course, and Scat Maggie, whose best finish was a 4th over the Tampa turf course. His second-dam, Ionlyhaveeyesforu, won a turf race at Belmont, and produced the Irish-raced stakes winner Gaff.
To be clear, he may simply not be good enough to win or place in this race, and he is stretching out after only one sprint, which is typically not ideal. Additionally, I would only be able to make a confident judgement about the surface switch after seeing him physically (I'll post my pre-race impressions if I am able to catch a glimpse on the feed). But as there are some subtle indications that he could move up on turf, he may be an interesting long-shot to consider using underneath in gimmicks.
▶️Race 6 – 3x Alw 3yo fillies 6.5f.
No less than three of the fillies raced up on a fast pace in their debuts (over sprint distances), and were stepped up into stakes company and stretched out in their next starts. Every one of them raced up on the pace early, and weakened through the final furlongs of those stakes. All three are now being cut back to a sprint distance. Unsurprisingly, two of them were trained by Bob Baffert, who is strongly prone to allow his fast debut runners to roll early.
Speed is an obvious asset in racehorses. But when they are taught, allowed, and/or encouraged to run so fast early in their debuts over sprint distances, it isn't always easy to get them to relax later. Some horses do overcome such management, but many others don't, and fail to develop to their full potential as a result.
▶️Race 8 – Gr. II Eight Belles 3yo fillies 7f.
Sippin Pretty has raced three times, and was treated with Lasix in each race. Today, because of the restrictions in place for stakes races, she will race without the drug. Now wouldn't it be nice, not to mention refreshing, if one of the countless racing "journalists" who are on the grounds at Churchill were to ask the filly's trainer, Ian Wilkes, if he has any related concerns? Might his response to such a question be of potentially more interest to bettors than the typical, anodyne responses to standard questions?
Not that I would expect any trainer to volunteer concern, but any responses to that type of question would help to inform the ongoing debate about how Lasix should be regulated in the future.
▶️Race 9 – Grade II Alysheba Stakes 8.5f.
A very interesting race! Now under the care of Bill Mott, Baeza produced a fine 3yo campaign, particularly given that he is a late (May) foal, and a later-developing physical type. Like his two sophomore nemeses, Sovereignty and Journalism, it can be assumed that he isn't fully wound up for his 4yo debut, and the distance is almost certainly short of his best. But there should be a solid, if not strong pace, and it would be disappointing if he were not minimally rolling late.
Will Tappan Street rebound from his poor Pegasus performance? Can the seven-year-old Skippylongstocking keep his impressive geriatric streak alive? Will lightly-raced Grande move forward off of a workmanlike win last out? Could Disruptor be a late-developing star in the making?
Lots of interesting questions to be answered, but my main interest will be to see how Baeza kicks off his 4yo campaign.
▶️Race 12 – Gr. II Edgewood 8.5f. Turf 3yo fillies
Superficially, this appears to be a very competitive, and open race. But the lion's share of the obvious contenders are coming out of the Appalachian at Keeneland, in which the first three finishers were involved in a photo, and the first six home were only separated by about three lengths. Though this race could well turn out to be a re-shuffling of that wild finish, when so many runners finish in such close proximity, I am inclined to look elsewhere. In this case, Indigo Woods (Ire) appears to be interesting, and especially given her 15/1 morning line. Now 2/2, including a win on debut over this very course and distance, I wrote briefly about her prior to that debut solely because her sire, Blue Point, is doing very well in Europe. I don't know how she will stack up to the others in this field, but at the right price, I'd be willing to gamble that she will fit well.
▶️Race 13 – Gr. I KY Oaks 9f.
In what appears to be another interesting and competitive race, I'm inclined to lean towards Percy's Bar. I like the way that her trainer, Ben Colebrook, a branch of the Christophe Clement trainer tree, has managed the filly, and she has looked quite good in training. She may not have run as fast as some of the others in the field from a figure standpoint, but I see no reason why she couldn't improve again in her second start of the season. It is true that she benefitted from a perfect, ground-saving trip in the Ashland, and that Zany raced wide, but I'm not convinced that the disparity between the trips fully explains the margin of victory.
Chris, I couldn't agree with you more and have been trying to tell the haters about Zany since her Ashland. I loved her before that race and after. If she loses and/or runs poorly, I'll be the first to say I was wrong. I'm expecting a monster effort with any type of clean trip. Just wish she drew further to the outside. @ChurchillDowns@KentuckyDerby
Most people seem to think that the Kentucky Oaks race is wide open this year and a very tough race to analyze but if you look at pace information in TimeformUS, Racing Flow, and OptixEQ a clear picture unfolds and the most likely winner and best value plays emerge from the confusion.
See the table below showing some pace information for selected Oaks preps.
Note that Zany was in a race that was as unfavorable to closers as possible (CFR of 1 on 1-100 scale of favorability to closers) and was run with the short Keeneland stretch (first wire). Her other 2026 prep was in a prep with a CFR of only 3, which she still won easily!
She will get a much better setup in the Oaks with a TimeformUS pace projector predicting a fast pace. Her fastest race as a 2yo (113 TFUS) was as fast or faster than any of the Oaks contenders have run as 3yos. Her 3yo races have not earned fast figs because of the same slow paces that compromised her chances of winning as a closer. Zany is clearly the most likely winner of the Oaks.
Lovely Grey and Search Party are two others that have been extremely compromised by slow paces and tough trips in their 2 most recent preps and should run much better with the expected much faster pace in the Oaks and will likely offer value in most pools.
You can get additional confirmation of this from the OptixEQ plot of the race which shows Zany as a huge square in the middle of the plot and Search Party and Lovely Grey as relatively large squares in Quadrant 4.
Zany, Lovely Grey, and Search Party are probably the three key horses to use if you want to unlock some value in this year’s Kentucky Oaks.
You can get more information from TimeformUS PPs for the race and from https://t.co/6ezMDWJBGt and https://t.co/ehvRjnPv5M.
Good luck and enjoy the races.
Ton of Speed in race . Meaning / Always a Runner and Zanny and Percys Bar will get the trips . This will be a jockeys race
Meaning - dont have high speed figures but my eye knows a gorrila when I see one
Its her time to shine. I think she will run a career best and flourish CD
