Why does dad come home, after a long day at work where he was yelled at by his boss, and he was in bumper to bumper traffic on the way home, and he comes home and out of frustration he kicks his cat?
That's called *displacement*.
Displacement is when you select a safe and recognizable target to vent your frustration where you know there will be no blowback.
Right now Meta is the cat.
Meta is a safe and predictable target for regulators, and the public, to take out their anger and frustration about things that are issues with society in general.
Meta has done some things worth regulating. But those few things have evolved into a situation where Meta is now the perfect vessel in which society can pour it's broader anxieties into - depression, anxiety, declining mental health, isolation, polarization, etc etc. Meta is a literally perfect target for this: They are extremely huge, extremely profitable - American ran and founded, by a recognizable billionaire who has had a feature length film made about how bad he is.
Almost everything meta is being accused of pre-existed meta. Infinite scroll was a feature they never invented, it had already existed with wide-spread usage. Autoplay videos is literally how cable tv and normal television has worked for 50 years. The "problems" of social media have countless companies in involved and people to blame: Apple and Google, for one - they are the device to access Meta products, then you have advertisers, streaming services, gaming companies, snapchat, tiktok, and many more that all contribute to the issues people are pointing to of anxiety and isolation.
But all the intensity is being thrown on Meta - because in every situation like this, you can't have a lawer say the accurate thing: "This is a deeply complex multi-factor issue contributing to these sociatal problems".
How do you extract any money out of the situation by doing that? No, you must have something to blame, a big juicy target that preferably already has bad PR and has a lot of money. That's the role Meta plays.
Semianalysis: "Market chatter suggests $GOOG is working with $AMD on a TPU project in the v10 generation. AMD’s involvement would be the first real involvement in a custom AI ASIC project, despite having a custom silicon team. AMD has strong IP especially in advanced packaging and SoIC. Additionally, CPU IP could also be a draw given Google and its customers are pushing for TPUs with on-package CPU cores for RL workloads."
$AVGO: "We are seeing lower TPU output in 2H26 than previous expectations...For 2027, we also see lower TPU output than our previous expectation of 6mn units of TPU 7 and TPU8i. This is driven by greater allocation towards other customers."

I’ve been working towards AGI my whole life, and as we enter this pivotal moment, I’m stepping into a new role as Chair of Google DeepMind & Chief Scientist of Alphabet. This will allow me to focus on long-term strategy, and accelerating scientific breakthroughs, including leaning into my work at Isomorphic to help cure disease.
I’m excited that @koraykv will be stepping up to lead GDM as SVP, alongside @joshwoodward and our exec team. I could not be more excited and confident about our amazing next chapter! 🚀
