Sahasralinga Tank, meaning “the tank of a thousand lingas,” is sacred water body located in Gouri Nagar, an old town locality about 8.3km south of Bhubaneswar.

Locally known as Devi Padahara, the tank is surrounded on all four sides by numerous miniature shrines in the pidha deul (tiered) style. Every shrine once housed a linga. Today, only 84 miniature temples remain in a well-preserved condition, however, most of these are now devoid of lingas.

The tank features flights of steps, a common feature of temple tanks, which were traditionally constructed to serve the ritual needs of devotees. Built in honor of Lord #Lingaraj, the tank dates back to the 11th-12th century CE.

The original name of the #LingarajTemple was #Kirtivasa. According to legend - also recorded in the Odia Mahabharata by Sarala Das dating 15th century CE - Goddess Parvati is believed to have slain the demons Kirti and Vasa at this site, hence the name.
