@pilgrimsissy If your dog did something naughty you tell them no firmly, while they're in the action, give them something else to distract from that behavior, and praise when they do what you want. I.e., barking a lot, "no." Give squeaky toy or whatever, praise for not barking.

@pilgrimsissy Time outs should be used as a 30 second or so calm down period to disrupt their bad behavior. An hour in a crate is mean. Their crate should be a comfort zone for them. If they need to be in there they should have fresh water and something to do.
