I really am sick of the argument that our allies have been freeloading. Those arguments are fundamentally flawed and, frankly, not very intelligent.

1. Our allies provide forward bases, ports, airspace access, logistics hubs, intelligence, prepositioning, and other infrastructure that dramatically extend the global reach of the U.S. military. U.S. Transportation Command itself describes allies and partners as essential to America's ability to move forces and supplies around the world. Without that network, American power projection would be substantially more difficult and expensive.

2. Our allies came to our defense after 9/11. NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in its history, and allied troops fought alongside Americans in Afghanistan for nearly twenty years. Some allies paid a very substantial price. Denmark, for example, lost 44 soldiers, giving it a military fatality rate per capita roughly comparable to, and slightly higher by some measures than, that of the United States.

3. Our allies buy enormous quantities of American weapons, technology, and military equipment. Those purchases support the U.S. defense-industrial base, sustain production lines, and create economies of scale. Foreign Military Sales orders can be combined with Pentagon procurement specifically to reduce the unit cost of equipment purchased by the U.S. military.

4. Allied countries also contribute industrial capacity, components, munitions, technology, and joint production to increasingly integrated defense supply chains. Companies such as Rheinmetall and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are part of a much broader allied industrial ecosystem; MHI, for example, produces Patriot systems and has participated in U.S.-Japanese missile production and component programs.

5. Most importantly, our allies are force multipliers. A major war with China would become vastly more difficult without Japanese bases, Australian and other regional access, allied logistics, intelligence, naval and air forces, and industrial capacity. Even the Trump administration's 2026 National Defense Strategy says that allied and partner contributions in the Indo-Pacific will be “vital” to deterring and balancing China.

Alliances have costs. So does having the world's most capable global military network. Calling allies “freeloaders” while ignoring what the United States receives in return is poor strategic accounting and, ultimately, dumb.
