The victims of the genocide in Gaza are Palestinians, and the perpetrators are Israelis. But genocide is a universal human phenomenon. As such, the responsibility to recognize, understand and oppose it lies with all of us. At the same time, while genocide shares common core aspects, every instance has unique characteristics.

B'Tselem Executive Director Yuli Novak talked with the "Eyes on Gaza" project to explain why the mass killing and destruction in Gaza did not emerge in a vacuum. They are the direct result of nearly 80 years of separation, militarization of Israeli society, and dehumanization of Palestinians, all of which paved the way for the catastrophe unfolding today.

Since the ceasefire took effect, Israel has killed 1,106 Palestinians, including 254 children, 118 women, and 34 elderly people, and wounded 3,507, including 982 children, 617 women, and 149 elderly people.
