"Get a mentor" is lazy advice. Most people don't need a mentor, they need a job that gives them real work to do.
Mentorship without exposure is just conversation and unnecessary motivational discourse.
@PharmJimmy I was crazy about accessing it when it was first launched many years ago. However, Netflix, the many years without access now means that Netflix and Prime have won the battle for my attention and familiarity.
I’m open to watching if there’s anything interesting there though.
I spent months applying for jobs. Early on, I wrote the way everyone told me to.
Polite. Cautious. Grateful-sounding.
"I am writing to express my interest..."
"I hope to be considered..."
"Thank you for your time and consideration."
I was invisible.
Then something changed. I stopped writing like I needed the job and started writing like I understood the problem they were trying to solve.
The responses changed. The interviews came.
I didn't get lucky. I got deliberate.
I've put the whole framework into an ebook.
Apply Like You Mean It: The Audacity Advantage for Job Seekers.
With my actual application emails and cover letters, annotated line by line. The exact language, the thinking, why it landed.
For fresh graduates who feel overlooked, and mid-level professionals who know their worth but can't seem to get that across on paper.
You're not underqualified. You're just being too polite.

I love my parents, but they didn’t make it easy for me. I say my name is Shakirah, I have to prove it. I hear the most cheesy pick-up lines.
I say my surname is Alaga, I have to prove it too because they think it’s a nickname or worse, they assume I’m an mc for Yoruba traditional weddings 🥲
TRENDING VIDEO: "My wife started having frequent headaches a few months after she quit Coca-Cola for fresh orange juice. She sent a fresh batch of the orange juice to the lab for testing and the results revealed that the oranges were not fit for human consumption because of the dangerous chemicals the farmers had used to ripen and preserve them" — Former vice-president Yemi Osinbajo
@jayhemz If youre in special industries like Banking, I can understand. However, no general service provider will continue to bear losses because it needs to give you reasonable notice.
@jayhemz If you’re running a business and making a loss, there’s no rule in this world that prevents you from shutting down without notice.
If there’s a mandatory notice period, who continues to bear the loss from their existence?
I got promoted because I stopped answering Slack messages for two hours every afternoon.
Originally, I was just trying to get work done.
From 1:00 to 3:00 PM, I would close Slack and ignore everyone.
The first day, someone from marketing messaged me six times about a broken hyperlink.
The second day, sales escalated a printer issue to my boss because I didn't respond.
My boss asked why I kept disappearing.
I told him I had created a daily “operational focus window” for proactive infrastructure work.
He loved that phrase.
He asked what I accomplished during it.
I said capacity planning, risk reduction, system hygiene, and technical debt remediation.
Mostly I was eating a leisurely lunch and doomscrolling Instagram Reels.
A week later, my boss told the entire IT department to adopt focus windows.
Then the CIO heard about it.
He rolled it out across Engineering.
HR wrote a company guide about protecting uninterrupted deep work.
Slack activity between 1:00 and 3:00 dropped dramatically.
Productivity apparently went up.
At my performance review, my boss specifically praised me for introducing a working model that had “changed how the organization thinks about focus.”
I received a promotion.
My first act as a senior leader was extending my focus window to 4pm.
If I were you in 2026/2027, I would not think of going into UI/UX design or virtual assistance.
Not because those skills are useless, but because oversupplied lanes pay oversupplied wages. Everyone rushed in, and now thousands of people are competing for the same handful of roles at crashed rates.
I would pick a lane with a proven shortage: cybersecurity, data, AI application, cloud. Each of this areas have different roles embedded in them.
Nigeria alone is projecting over 200,000 new tech openings concentrated in these exact areas. Companies here and abroad are actively struggling to fill them.
Go where the demand outweighs the talent, not where the tutorials are trending.
