During pre-production location scouting, we drove countless mountain roads like this one. The route on the GPS always looked exactly like this. Even then, I knew I wanted to write this into the script: at the point where the people were physically closest in a straight line—despite being separated by the winding road—the one leaving would honk the horn so the one staying behind could hear it.

At the time, our professional drone operator wasn’t with the crew. But by chance, we came across another mountain road with the exact same shape. We hurriedly borrowed a drone from a local (thankfully, people in Yunnan seem to have drones everywhere). Our incredible cinematographer flew it himself, and we managed to capture the scene just before sunset.

In the end, it perfectly realized the farewell I had imagined. Looking back now, if you asked me which scene felt like a gift from heaven, it would be this one. It was both part of the plan and completely beyond it. I’m grateful, once again, for heaven’s kindness.
