If the model were fair, there’d be no guilt to explain away.
The doorbell isn’t the problem.
The question is whether India’s gig platforms are willing to share surplus, accept accountability, and stop hiding wage-setting power behind emotional narratives.

Shifting responsibility to consumers (“tip more, feel less guilty”) is convenient. Middle-class customers don’t set payout formulas or take platform commissions. Dignity cannot be crowdsourced via tips - it must be built into the system.

The claim that regulation will “kill livelihoods” is a false binary. India isn’t debating bans - it’s debating minimum earning floors, accident insurance, fuel compensation, and transparency. These don’t destroy jobs; they prevent exploitation.
@deepigoyal 3/6
Saying “they choose this work” ignores Indian labour reality. As Abhijit Banerjee & Esther Duflo note in Poor Economics, “the poor don’t have the luxury of making the right choices.”
When alternatives are weak, bargaining power collapses. That’s compulsion, not choice.

In Indian cities, a delivery partner’s earnings depend on opaque incentive slabs, fuel price, waiting time at restaurants, & algorithmic allocation - all controlled by platform.
Tipping or eye contact doesn’t fix a system where risk is pushed downward and margins flow upward.

This debate isn’t about “visibility” or consumer guilt. It’s about power.
Customers don’t decide delivery pay in India — platforms do. They set base rates, incentives, penalties. Turning this into a moral lecture for the middle class distracts from who actually controls wages
