How do ethnographers tease out ethnogenesis events? Is there a formal set of criteria or does everyone wake up one day and agree that there are such peoples as Serbs? What are the usual material conditions under which such things happen? Surely it's a spectrum, right? It's very much feels like it can be a spectrum kind of thing, at least sometimes.
