This video caused immense discomfort and panic among ISWAP fighters hoping to exit the group through the government’s DDR programme. The video features a man praising the Senate’s call for the government to halt its rehabilitation programme for repentant terrorists.

The fighters, who reached out to their former colleagues – those who had exited and were working with the government to get more people out – feared they would be killed if they came out. They wanted assurances that no such thing would happen; otherwise, they would stay and fight to the death.

While the DDR programme has its flaws, it has without doubt recorded some successes, including reducing the groups’ (JAS and ISWAP) fighting force and providing actionable intelligence to security forces.

OPERATION HADIN KAI FOILS ATTEMPT TO ABDUCT 46 STUDENTS AT FGGC MONGUNO

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in collaboration with personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), successfully foiled an attempted mass abduction by ISWAP terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, at about 0130 hours (1:30 a.m.) on 19 July 2026. The FGGC facility is currently being utilized by the Borno State Government as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno.

The terrorists reportedly gained access to the facility with the assistance of suspected collaborators in an attempt to abduct students. Alert security personnel immediately engaged the terrorists with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, effectively stalling their advance with Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force (QRF) immediately reinforcing the school. Confronted by the superior combat capability and determined resistance of the security forces, the terrorists were forced to abandon their criminal mission and flee in confusion without achieving their objective. During the encounter, parts of the school infrastructure sustained damage but the attempt was well contained by troops in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force personnel.

Following the operation, troops successfully rescued and evacuated all 46 students to Kinnasara Barracks, Monguno, where they received immediate medical assessment and appropriate care. All rescued students have been confirmed medically stable and no student was abducted. Regrettably, some students were fatally struck by the sporadic gunfire from the terrorists during the firefight.

Operation HADIN KAI extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and reassures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard the lives of residents and protect critical public institutions across the North East in liaison with the Borno State Government. Exploitation of the incident is ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspected collaborators, while troops and other security agencies are actively tracking the fleeing terrorists.

THE TIMBUKTU TRIANGLE: WHERE NIGERIA'S BRAVEST ARE TESTED

There are battlefields, and then there is the Timbuktu Triangle.

Located around the Damboa, Borno and Yobe axis, the Timbuktu Triangle is one of the most dangerous t£rrorist enclaves in Nigeria and has long served as a major stronghold of ISWAP. Its vast, unforgiving terrain, thick vegetation, hidden explosive devices, ambush routes, and well-fortified terrorist camps have made it one of the most difficult areas for military operations in the North East.

For every kilometre gained in the Timbuktu Triangle, brave Nigerian troops often pay a heavy price. The area has witnessed fierce battles, deadly ambushes, IED and VBIED attacks, and countless close-quarter engagements. It is a place where courage is tested every single day.

One of the finest officers to fall there was Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Ebisingha Alari, the gallant Commanding Officer of the 149 Battalion.

On 24 January 2025, while leading his men during Operation DESERT SANITY, Lt. Col. Alari and his troops launched a major offensive deep into the Timbuktu Triangle to dismantle terrorist camps. The operation dealt a devastating blow to the insurgents, with over 70 terrorists, including three senior ISWAP commanders, neutralised. But in a desperate counterattack, the terrorists deployed a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) against the advancing troops. The explosion claimed the lives of Lt. Col. Alari and many of his men, while others sustained injuries.

The battle was one of the bloodiest in recent years. The Defence Headquarters later confirmed that 22 Nigerian soldiers were killed in action during the clearance operations in the Timbuktu Triangle, even as troops destroyed terrorist camps and inflicted massive losses on the enemy.

Lt. Col. Alari died exactly as every great military leader hopes to be remembered: leading from the front. He shared the dangers of his soldiers, inspired them by his example, and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Nigeria.

Today, we remember not only Lt. Col. Alari but every officer and soldier who has fought, bled, and fallen in the Timbuktu Triangle and across every battlefield in defence of our nation. Their names may not all be known to the public, but their sacrifices are written into the history of Nigeria.

To every soldier still holding the line in the harsh deserts of the North East, to every sailor guarding our waters, every airman dominating our skies, every police officer, DSS operative, NSCDC personnel, and every member of our security services, thank you. Nigeria sleeps because you remain awake.

To the families who wait anxiously for phone calls, who celebrate reunions and endure heartbreaking losses, your sacrifices are just as real. Your strength and resilience deserve our deepest respect.

May Almighty God grant eternal rest to Lt. Col. Thomas Ebisingha Alari and all our fallen heroes. May He comfort their families, protect those still on the frontlines, and bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Heroes never truly die. They live on in the freedom they defended and in the Nation they gave everything to protect.

BREAKING: A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Muhammad Sani to 20 years in prison for helping conceal information about notorious bandit leader Kachalla Dan Karami, a move that reportedly enabled him to escape from security operatives.

This case is a reminder that bandits & armed groups often rely on more than just weapons, they also depend on people willing to protect them from within. The bigger question is; how many more collaborators are still operating unnoticed?

UPDATE: A court has granted bail to security analyst Dr. Bashir Kurfi and adjourned the case until August 13 for the continuation of proceedings.

Dr. Kurfi is facing charges of alleged defamation and making false statements over claims he made during a Trust TV interview, in which he alleged that the Katsina State Government sponsored some former bandits to perform this year's Hajj.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and the case remains before the court.

Security forces in Anka, Zamfara State, have inflicted heavy losses on bandits who tried to attack construction workers. Notorious bandit leader Sani Yellow is reportedly among the casualties. Mentioned for particular praise are the CJTF men recruited from Borno State, who engaged and held the bandits before the military arrived. The CJTF guys are attached to the construction company, which is why they were the first responders.
