Evidence shows that the UAE has been targeting Sudanese activists who criticize the Rapid Support Forces, using intimidation, arbitrary detention and denial of legal access. The arrest of Nader Maryoud — a leading spokesperson for the Salha Resistance Committees — came days after his group publicly condemned the Rapid Support Forces, reinforcing suspicions of politically motivated detention.

The broader context points to the Rapid Support Forces’ central role in Sudan’s war, where they stand accused of mass killings, sexual violence, forced disappearances and ethnic targeting. Multiple reports indicate that the UAE has served as their primary external backer, funneling weaponry through networks extending across Libya, Chad, Uganda and Somalia, including British- and Chinese-origin arms later found in the hands of Rapid Support Forces fighters.

The capture of el-Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces triggered global outrage after survivors and satellite imagery revealed scenes of mass executions, ransom operations using mobile banking applications, and widespread sexual violence. These findings pushed the UN Human Rights Council to launch an independent investigation, while the United States and Saudi Arabia placed direct pressure on the UAE, warning that its continued support could severely damage its international standing.

Nader Maryoud is not alone. Dozens of Sudanese activists remain detained in the UAE, including senior political figures — a pattern that Sudanese civil society interprets as deliberate silencing to shield a paramilitary force implicated in some of the country’s gravest atrocities.
