They do worship Athena that’s precisely why the scene hits so hard.

In Nolan’s The Odyssey, the beheading of the Athena statue is deliberately match-cut to Greek soldiers killing a young Trojan priestess of Athena (also played by Zendaya) inside her own temple during the sack of Troy. It’s not random vandalism or a rejection of the goddess. It’s pure hubris and the chaos of victory: the same men who prayed to Athena for victory still desecrate her sacred space and slaughter her devotee the moment they win.

That act becomes the root of Odysseus’s guilt. The “Athena” who later appears to him throughout the journey is either the goddess taking the face of the slain priestess to haunt him… or (as Nolan himself leans) a psychological manifestation of the war crime he can’t escape. Either way, the statue’s head coming off isn’t about them not worshipping her
it’s the visual proof that they betrayed everything she stands for.
