OK. Here's the issue.
There is a strong argument that Ukraine is THE climactic battle of the Thucydides Trap.
That is: the big war between the US and China is actually between their proxies Ukraine and Russia.
And this settlement — to this war — determines the next world order.
Because there won’t be a fight in Taiwan if NATO is defeated in Ukraine. Taiwan will just surrender to China because they know they won't get reliable Western military support.
And so will everyone else.
So, this may be the decisive moment when terms get negotiated with the China/Russia group for the next however many years.
That means that even if you think Ukraine was a disaster and Zelensky is a dummy, you don’t want NATO to be catastrophically defeated in Kiev like it was in Afghanistan.
That would be bad for Democrats, Republicans, Europeans, Japanese — just about everyone under the US security umbrella.
Instead you want the best possible outcome to this terrible war, under the circumstances.
Because the West may already have fallen into the Thucydides Trap. And if so, it should very carefully think about whether it can get out.
I’m not going to pretend like I didn’t just watch this video 15 times so that I could zoom in on every person’s face and determine whose reaction/poker face was best.
I did 4 cups of ayahuasca once and tunneled through my consciousness in a state of euphoria having one epiphany after another. At some point, the sense of epiphany continued without any meaningful referent, as if I was leaning on the epiphany key in my brain.
That then triggered a meta-epiphany that psychedelics only make you feel like you're learning something new or deep, sorta like how déjà vu is probably just your brain's familiarity circuit misfiring in a context that isn't actually familiar.
If psychedelics have given me any durable insight, it's that our consciousness is extremely fallible and often misleading, particularly with respect to valence.
indian men can joke about sati pratha, rajasthan girl infanticide, women being bad drivers, stereotyping/tradbasing women etc. and get no flack for it but when an indian woman jokes about anything that doesn't pertain to the dehati male humour they get harrassed and doxxed
Always wanted to learn about superconductivity? Before leaving for @covcampus , Chris Hooley left us @mpi_pks a wonderful farewell present with his lecture series on superconductivity, which we are excited to share! You're in for a treat!

@lufthansa my girlfriend's flight from Rome-Frankfurt (1st segment in Rome-Frankfurt-Delhi-CCU) got cancelled. Luggage is already checked in till CCU. PNR - 5E9LWA. What replacement options will you be able to give, and what about the luggage?
@IndiGo6E I'm going to fly 6E5289 from Mumbai to Kolkata (along with one other person) and youe stafff inflated the weight of the bags from 30 to 34 kg so that we had to pay extra. This has happened to me before as well. (1/2)
I weighed the bags at an intl. airport and also once before leaving my place. Both times it was 30 kilos. I'm never using @IndiGo6E again. Future passengers, please be warned 🙅♂️(2/2)
Whether it's liberals believing that today's Wordle was too hard, or conservatives believing that Hillary Clinton drinks the blood of babies, misconceptions abound on both sides. Only I, and other non-partisan centrists like me, can know the real truth on all subjects.
I've now been asked multiple times for my take on Elon's offer for Twitter.
So fine, this is what I think about that. I will assume the takeover succeeds, and he takes Twitter private. (I have little knowledge/insight into how actual takeover battles work or play out)

A breathtakingly brilliant yet devastating essay on Russia's war on Ukraine, by Eliot Cohen, one of America's best thinkers and writers on foreign and security matters.
Head and shoulders above almost everything written on the West's response to the war.

Occasional reminder that the photoelectric effect does not demonstrate the existence of quantized photons, even though we teach every undergrad physics major that it does.

(It demonstrates a different principle quantum mechanics: Fermi's golden rule)
Missed a heartbeat seeing this! Thank you so much @narendramodi sir for appreciating my idea - UPI is truly a revolution that the whole world today is taking notice of.
This pat on my back will keep me going for years, thank you so much!
