Wolves account for approximately 5% of all predator-caused cattle deaths in the US & the death caused by all predators are only 2.4% of total cattle loss by deaths, according to historical data from the USDA. It is most unreasonable to delist wolves, or any wildlife from ESA protection. This is their land too, they were here first.

On September 4, Trump signed an executive order called "Supporting America's Ranchers."

An executive order is the president telling government departments what to do. It is not a law, and on its own it can't remove an animal's protection.

What this one does is start a review. It gives the Secretary of the Interior (the official in charge of wildlife) 90 days to decide whether gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves have recovered enough to be taken off the endangered species list. It also tells his department to write up a proposed law to remove them, and to look at making it easier to legally kill wolves.

Right now, nothing has changed. Mexican gray wolves are still fully protected. Killing one is still a federal crime. Nobody has been given permission to shoot them.

WHY THE REVIEW IS HARD TO JUSTIFY

There are official rules for when a Mexican wolf can come off the list. The wild population has to average 320 wolves over eight years, and it has to stay above 320 for the three most recent years.

Here is the actual count, from the US Fish and Wildlife Service:

2023: 257
2024: 286
2025: 319

The eight-year average is about 222, not 320. And the population has never once gone above 320 in a single year, so the "three years above 320" rule is at zero out of three. At the rate they're growing, they wouldn't hit these numbers for several more years.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. The Interior Secretary's decision, due in about 90 days, so early December.

2. If he decides to move forward, the government has to publish the plan and open a public comment period. By law they have to read and respond to what people send in. Anyone can write one. You do not have to live in the US or be a citizen. This is the moment where speaking up genuinely counts, so it's worth saving your energy for it.

3. Congress. There's a separate bill by Rep. Paul Gosar that would take the Mexican wolf off the list by law. It passed a committee vote in January and still needs to pass the full House, the Senate, and be signed. This route matters because when Congress removes protection by law, nobody has to prove the animal has recovered, and courts usually can't step in. It's happened once before, with wolves in Montana and Idaho in 2011. Doing it to a subspecies with only 319 animals left would be a much harder sell, so it's unlikely, but it's the one worth keeping an eye on.

4. Individual states dropping wolves from their own protected lists, which the order encourages.

So: this is real and worth paying attention to, but it's the beginning of a long process with several steps that all have to happen first. Nothing is decided.
