“When a child dies, a piece of a mother’s heart goes with them, and the rest learns to beat around the emptiness.”
I talked about this a week ago in one of my posts, wondering whether the series would also show this particular aspect of the Feng family mourning the loss of their precious QingTian. Today, that question was answered—and they really went there.
It was devastating to see and hear all of my suppositions played out in real time.
Hearing Wai Po echo almost exactly what I had written—“There’s nothing more tragic than seeing a parent bury their child”—tore my heart to pieces all over again.
And then there was QT’s mother, trying to find a way to accompany her son in the only way she knows how: by giving the rest of her days to prayer, hoping that somehow it will make his journey more peaceful and less lonely.
I think this is her way of coping. Because if she isn't doing something—anything—that feels helpful, I don't know how she could possibly survive a loss this devastating. Perhaps praying for QT is the only thing that still allows her to feel like a mother to her son.
Then QingLang.
When Jialin Jie told him, “You seem okay,” and he answered, “What else can I do if I’m not?”—that line made everything feel painfully real and heartbreakingly relatable.
Sometimes grief doesn't look like screaming or falling apart. Sometimes it looks like continuing to breathe, continuing to function, and answering people when they ask if you're okay because what else can you do?
I honestly wish I could be that brave if I ever found myself in a similar situation one day.
Finally, I want to talk about QingLang making a memory book from the ferns he was cutting.
My interpretation of this gesture is that this is QingLang's way of coping with his loss.
There is no body to preserve. No hand to hold one last time. No face to look at and say goodbye to. QT simply disappeared, leaving behind almost nothing tangible to prove that he was ever there—except for that one lonely shoe.
So perhaps, by preserving those little pieces of fern, QingLang is preserving little pieces of his brother.
If he cannot preserve QT's life itself, then he will keep safe, within reach, the small things that remind him of him—the way QT loved nature, the way he found a home in the mountains of Molie, and all those quiet moments that made up his existence.
Maybe that memory book is QingLang's way of holding on.
Because sometimes, when someone is taken from us without giving us the chance to say goodbye, we desperately need something we can touch.
Something we can hold.
Something that says, you were here. You were real. I remember you.
And perhaps this is the closest QingLang can come to holding his silly boy one last time.
My heart absolutely shattered watching this💔😭😭😭

I just want to share this beautiful video compilation posted by Hu YiChen on XHS.
His caption says it all:
"A letter written by fireworks to the stars."

I've written before about the striking contrast between the Xu brothers, but after the tragedy of Episode 13, I found myself revisiting their stories from a different perspective. This time, I noticed something I hadn't paid much attention to before.
"ChangYang is like a hunter, and you're like a trap. One chases after the prey, while the other waits for the prey to fall in."
That line perfectly encapsulates the difference between the two brothers.
Let's begin with the Feng brothers.
Both QingLang and QingTian experienced life-altering events. QingTian all but lost the love of his life because of an accident while QingLang lost the person who could have been his partner due to greed & machinations of the entertainment industry.
The result was eerily similar.
Both men withdrew from the world. Both lost faith in the people around them. They continued living, but only in the most literal sense—mere shadows of who they once were, quietly enduring each day while carrying wounds that never truly healed.
Then the Xu brothers entered their lives.
Both WenShu and ChangYang fell deeply in love, yet the way they pursued that love couldn't have been more different.
WenShu loved QingTian with extraordinary gentleness. He treated him as though he were made of glass—someone too fragile to be touched carelessly. He even orchestrated his "interest" in QingLang and became his sponsor simply because it allowed him to remain close to QingTian. But beyond creating opportunities to be near him, WenShu chose to wait. He hoped that, in time, QingTian would heal enough to notice him and become open to loving again.
In other words, WenShu was the trap.
He patiently waited for his "prey" to come to him of its own free will, refusing to rush or force anything.
ChangYang, on the other hand, became the hunter the moment he met QingLang.
He planned meticulously, moved every piece on the chessboard with purpose, and carefully arranged circumstances so that QingLang would gradually find his way into his life. Every decision was intentional. Every step brought him closer to the person he loved.
He didn't merely wait for fate to intervene.
He pursued it.
Both brothers schemed in their own ways, but the difference lay in their strategy, their decisiveness, and their willingness to act.
WenShu had the patience.
ChangYang had the conviction.
Interestingly, QingTian subtly pointed out this flaw much earlier in the story, but WenShu never truly understood the hint. He believed there would always be more time.
Episode 13 cruelly reminds us that time is the one thing none of us are promised.
We don't get to decide when the right moment will arrive, and life rarely adjusts itself to accommodate our hesitation.
That realization left me with an incredibly bitter question.
If WenShu had possessed the same determination and strategic resolve as his didi, would his story with QingTian have ended differently?
Would one confession made a little sooner...
One brave step taken before it was too late...
...have been enough to change both of their fates?
Perhaps that's the tragedy Zelia laoshi wanted us to confront.
Love doesn't only ask us to feel.
Sometimes, it asks us to act before time quietly slips away.
