Karnataka will leverage Bhashini, an AI-powered language technology platform, to make digital governance and citizen services more accessible in local languages and dialects, IT and E-Governance Minister @PriyankKharge said on Oct 8.
Speaking at a Bhashini workshop in Bengaluru, Kharge said technology could simplify the state’s 700-plus citizen services under Praja Seva & e-Governance. He said AI, voice & translation tools should adapt to citizens rather than the other way around.
Kharge also invited startups to develop solutions for public-sector challenges under Government First Policy, with DeepTech and AI innovations eligible for grants of up to Rs 1 crore.
The future of Digital India must speak the languages of India. 🇮🇳
At the #BHASHINI Rajyam Workshop, Karnataka Chapter, we advanced the conversation on bringing Language-First Digital Public Infrastructure into governance, citizen services and real-world applications.
Through its integrated ecosystem of AI models, language datasets, APIs and innovation partnerships, BHASHINI is building the foundations for multilingual technology at population scale, enabling governments, developers and researchers to build solutions that work across India’s linguistic diversity.
With Karnataka’s technology leadership and rich linguistic heritage, there is immense potential to turn this vision into impactful, scalable solutions for citizens.
BHASHINI is not just breaking language barriers. It is building the infrastructure for a more inclusive, multilingual Digital India.

Inaugrated the BHASHINI Rajyam Workshop in Bengaluru, bringing together government departments, institutions, technical teams and startups to explore how language AI can improve public service delivery.
BHASHINI offers speech-to-text, text-to-speech, translation, transliteration, OCR and language detection across 23+ Indian languages and 65+ dialects, which can help make digital services more accessible across languages and literacy levels.
The workshop is focused on identifying Karnataka-specific use cases, building better datasets and glossaries for Kannada and other local languages and taking promising ideas from pilots to real world deployment.
As we strengthen the Karnataka Government’s Praja Seva initiative, these technologies will play an important role in helping government reach citizens in the language they understand best.
