POLICE DISRUPT PEACEFUL STUDENT PROTEST, BREAK STUDENTS’ LOCK AND THREATEN ARREST

The peaceful protest by students was today disrupted following the arrival of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ojogboru police station, who allegedly broke the lock placed by the protesting students at the school gate, thereby reopening the gate and allowing lecturers and other personnel to gain access to the campus. The intervention, rather than de-escalating the situation, reportedly caused panic among the students, with the police allegedly threatening to arrest students who insisted on maintaining the protest. Several students were consequently forced to retreat from the gate out of fear of arrest.

The development has raised serious concerns among students and stakeholders who maintain that the protest was peaceful and intended to draw the attention of the institution’s authorities to their grievances. A peaceful protest should not be met with intimidation, threats or force. The students are calling on relevant authorities, civil society organisations and the media to take note of the situation and ensure that their rights to peaceful expression and assembly are respected.

This is not the kind of picture anyone should have to see from a higher institution of learning. As students shut down the campus in protest, female students are now among those forced to scale the fence in an attempt to gain access. If students have reached the point where they must climb fences to enter their own institution, then something is seriously wrong. This is no longer just about a protest, it is about the frustration, desperation and helplessness students are experiencing. Someone needs to listen. Students deserve better.

Law Students of Atiba University have today shut down and locked the campus gate as they commenced an indefinite protest over their grievances, insisting that they will not vacate the premises until the management addresses their concerns.

Following the development, men of the Nigeria Police Force arrived at the scene and engaged the protesting students, appealing for calm and urging them to give the institution’s management until Wednesday to address the situation. The police informed the students that the management had indicated that representatives would come on Wednesday to meet with them.

However, the students remained resolute and rejected the appeal to leave the premises. They insisted that they would maintain their position and remain at the gate until the Vice-Chancellor, the Founder, and the Registrar personally come out to address them and provide a satisfactory response to their demands. The protesters maintained that there would be no reopening of the gate and no withdrawal from the protest until the university’s principal authorities directly engage with them.

🚨THE STUDENTS HAVE LISTED OUT THEIR DEMANDS;

OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF DEMAND FROM ATIBA UNIVERSITY AFFECTED LAW STUDENTS TO THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT.

This is to officially request immediate action regarding our current academic standing, following the university's inability to secure accreditation from the Council of Legal Education (CLE).

The management required that we wait till result is out from the CLE and we now have what we have been waiting for. We are now aware the school has failed to secure approval to admit Law Students and this accreditation status of the school from the CLE is public and cannot be denied authenticity. There is no other striking evidence than what the CLE has officially published.

Given the significant amount of time lost and the severe psychological and emotional toll this situation has taken on we, the affected students, we hereby present the following reasonable demands:

The foremost is an official physical meeting with affected students and parents respectively. The management must not hide at this time but hold a conference to consider the demands made.

1. *Full Tuition Refund*: A reasonable refund of school fees paid by the affected students throughout the duration of their unapproved enrollment in the program by the school.

2. *Free Transcripts*: The immediate issuance of official academic transcripts, free of charge, to all students or parents who makes request for them. The school made a promise to consider cost-free transcripts when the result from the COUNCIL OF LEGAL EDUCATION is out and now it is.

3. In connection with the above request, the immediate release of all pending results to facilitate and expedite the processing of these transcripts.

4. *Transfer of Students*: A transparent update on the process of the promised liaison with various Faculties of Law as the school as mentioned by the school. This line of action was promised several months ago and we request to know whether this is true or a facade.

We expect a reply on the facilitation of these demands before the end of this week on *Friday 21st August, 2026.*

This is a critical moment for our future, and we look forward to receiving a timely feedback from management regarding these matters before an escalation of grievances.
