A long post about my AI use for people to spurt opinions about:
This isn't an almighty praise to the AI gods. I'm just saying in the right hands it can be an incredibly useful tool, especially when you just want to make shit work.
For creatives, I know AI is terrible. We've removed the AI generated wallpapers originally used in Nobara and replaced them with community created ones.
For coders, I know AI generated PRs can be a pain from users who don't understand the generated code as well as bug reports, and that the sources used to generate the code is basically a grey area.
For the environment, yeah, it's terrible. I get that too. AI is basically the poster boy for the saying "Too much of a good thing."
But, man it can really, really solve some important problems too.
First -- credit where it's do, I started with patchsets from the following people:
Etaash (em-proton) -- massive amount of wine-wayland work
Erhan (wine-wineland) -- wine-wayland system tray implementation and child-process rendering
JS Deck (ps5-haptics) -- all the ground work for getting ds5 haptics working
Without the people doing the heavy lifting, and making their work open source, AI would not be even remotely able to expand their work (for better or for worse, I understand feeding the beast is a taboo topic).
With the base work done by these three I was able to use AI to expand their work in proton:
- wine-wayland system notifications working with the system tray icons
- steam overlay working in wine-wayland + vulkan + lsteamclient
- ps4/ps5 controller haptic feedback + controller audio in most games, along with several new options to allow them to work properly.
Additionally, I was able to use AI to:
- Completely rework the entire video playback stack to a strictly winedmo + ffmpeg implementation with most games working perfectly and enabling many previously completely broken games.
- steam overlay working with opengl + winex11 + lsteamclient
- steam overlay working with opengl + wine-wayland + lsteamclient
- created a new vulkan layer for steam overlay that does not touch wine-wayland code, and is portable.
In the future I would also like to expand the vulkan layer steam overlay code to work with native vulkan + wine-wayland (I hear you CS2 guys).
When people refer to AI generated code as "untested AI slop" -- it's painful to me, because I (and others) do take the time to check what I'm doing and if it's working correctly. At the end of the day even if a robot is generating the code, it's still a human that's reviewing the code and checking things to make sure they do work as expected, and still prone to human error. It still takes a lot of time, you're just moving much faster and getting much more done.
Sure, plopping a prompt in, telling it "write me a gui that does x y z" and yeeting it to a git repo blindly could most definitely be called "AI slop", but even then if the person knows what they are doing, knows how to review the code, and iterates + improves the code, even that slop can turn into a useful tool. If it does something you wanted it to do or fixes a difficult problem you personally have, would you still call it slop?
Navigating the current AI landscape is rough as a developer. Yes, I said "as a developer" because I've been involved with code development for over 30 years. AI is just the latest tool in my toolbox. Saying someone isn't a developer simply because they currently use AI and you don't like it is offensive imo.
I honestly shouldn't care as much as I do, I guess I'm not as much of a super geek as those who would rather spend months learning everything necessary to do the hard parts manually. Not saying the learning process is bad. It's great, but also I'm 41, I've had my share of those experiences. Sometimes I just really want to make shit work and move on.
We as a linux gaming community have been wanting wine-wayland to work properly in proton for how long? What about controller input? What about video playback in our favorite games? Let alone other parts of the OS and linux desktop experience.
Like it or not AI is helping all of those long standing wants to move forward with possible solutions and alternatives at an astounding pace. Personally to me it feels like everyone hates AI until it fixes something they like or want. It's a bit judgmental.
I have tons of colleagues in the space, some pro AI, some very con AI, I respect the work on both sides very, very much. I just hope people will start having more of an open mind about AI use in tech at least, and give developers using it a break, especially those of us trying to make something better that benefits others.
Bundesregierung will nach zahlreichen Vorfällen kein Signal an Russland senden. Sie will keine roten Linien definieren. Sie will keine Konsequenzen ziehen.
AI has completely changed what I loved about software engineering.
Earlier, you’d sit with a problem, understand it deeply, write the code, break it, debug it, and eventually own the solution.
Now so much of engineering feels like staring at a screen waiting for an agent to finish.
And the worst part isn’t even that AI writes code. It’s that we’re slowly losing ownership of the codebase.
AI generates thousands of lines we barely read. The code becomes a black box. Then something breaks, and suddenly you’re expected to debug a system you never really understood in the first place.
At the same time, constantly delegating thinking to agents feels like it’s destroying our attention span and our ability to patiently read, reason about, and understand code.
Maybe we’re shipping faster.
But sometimes it genuinely feels like we’re becoming worse engineers while our codebases become harder to understand.
Please watch and consider that Russia is proudly targeting and murdering Ukrainian children, and that there are real people operating these drones. That they have commanders all the way up to Putin authorizing this terror campaign.
Given the exponentially increased "focus" Russia has given Moldova lately, and the chance it might actually try something in Transnistria to generate some sort of a rally around the flag effect, I figured I’d do a short thread on the history of the place for some context. 🧵
The Russians have attacked the largest shopping center in Kryvyi Rih.
14 dead and over 100 injured.
The cruelty of the Russians is unfathomable.
The passivity of Western Europeans is unfathomable.
I’m sorry, but I’ve lost all hope that justice exists in this world. For five years, the world has watched Russia drown an entire European country in blood, raining tens of thousands of missiles and bombs down on its cities — and still acts as if this were somehow normal.
Was wollen wir? ausführlich darstelle.
A pain no words can describe.
Kyiv. A grandmother crying over the body of her grandson.
If years of Ukrainian suffering no longer move the world, then the world has lost its humanity.
