The astronauts. Their ride around the Moon.
The Artemis II astronauts pose for a group photo after viewing their Orion spacecraft — which they named Integrity — in the well deck of USS John P. Murtha following their splashdown.
The Artemis II astronauts were all smiles on the flight deck of USS John P. Murtha after they were extracted from their Orion spacecraft after splashdown.
Welcome home Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy! 🫶
The Artemis II astronauts have splashed down at 8:07pm ET (0007 UTC April 11), bringing their historic 10-day mission around the Moon to an end.
Orion's main parachute has deployed. The spacecraft has a system of 11 chutes that will slow it down from around 300 mph to 20 mph for splashdown.

Orion’s crew and service module have separated. The crew module continues on its path towards Earth while the service module will harmlessly burn up in Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. The Artemis II return trajectory is designed to ensure any remaining debris does not pose a hazard to land, people, or shipping lanes.
Your close personal friends, the @NASAArtemis astronauts (and Rise), can't wait to get home!
In the meantime, enjoy a few new pictures from their camera roll. And watch their return with us live at https://t.co/z1RgZwQkWS.
New record🥇
The Artemis II astronauts are now farther from Earth than humans have ever been! At 1:57 p.m. EDT, they broke the record set by Apollo 13 in 1970.
Their journey around the far side of the Moon today will take them a maximum distance of 252,752 miles from Earth.
Easter Moon from @Space_Station (almost egg-like tonight). Turns out my four @NASAArtemis friends are somewhere in that frame, too. As are the rest of you in the second photo, as the blue glow of Earth's atmosphere draws the Moon in. Seconds after this shot, it had disappeared completely, setting behind its Mother Earth.
Next stop: lunar flyby.
The Orion spacecraft recently ignited its main engine on the service module for about six minutes to provide about 6,000 pounds of thrust. This maneuver sets the Artemis II astronauts on the path to the Moon.
✅ #Artemis II update: GO for TLI!
For the 'Translunar Injection' burn, the spacecraft will ignite the main engine on the European Service Module for five minutes and 49 seconds beginning at 00:49 BST/01:49 CEST. https://t.co/VlBdGLZDg7
Liftoff.
The Artemis II mission launched from @NASAKennedy at 6:35pm ET (2235 UTC), propelling four astronauts on a journey around the Moon.
Artemis II will pave the way for future Moon landings, as well as the next giant leap — astronauts on Mars.
