@JeremysITLab AD, it’s the “tie breaker” and only time you look at it is when you have exact routes that match learned from different sources. Essentially comparing equal cost or equal metric routes. If you have same cost and same source, like ospf or eigrp, then you get ECMP.

@NetworkChuck I think they are useful generally to help you with getting into a field or learning a specific skill set, like CCNA or programming language specific ones, but should only be used for that. You will always need to learn more in-depth knowledge after that through experience, etc..
