📅 June 24, 2024 - Updates on Benchmarking LLMs
GPT-4-April (@OpenAI ) is the best but recent Claude-3.5-Sonnet has almost caught up (@AnthropicAI ), Gemini 1.5 (Google) are within range but still behind. Llama-3 (@Meta ) is the best open-weight model.

It was a pleasure to host this workshop at #icmr2024 in Phuket, 🇹🇭
Thanks to our keynote speakers @neous@delliott for amazing talks, and our invited talks by Tianwei Chen, @_ericmb , Yusuke Hirota, Chihaya Matsuhira, Tianwei Chen were very inspiring 🙌
2024 is a great year for Visual Place Recognition, with 4 VPR papers at CVPR 2024!
One of them (SUE) focuses on (still much unexplored) uncertainty for VPR, the other 3 (SALAD, CricaVPR, BoQ) are "pure retrieval" VPR papers.
Below my thoughts, praise and criticism on VPR trends:
New (2h13m 😅) lecture: "Let's build the GPT Tokenizer"
Tokenizers are a completely separate stage of the LLM pipeline: they have their own training set, training algorithm (Byte Pair Encoding), and after training implement two functions: encode() from strings to tokens, and decode() back from tokens to strings. In this lecture we build from scratch the Tokenizer used in the GPT series from OpenAI.
🚀We are thrilled to release LLaVA-1.6, with improved reasoning, OCR, and world knowledge. It supports higher-res inputs, more tasks, and exceeds Gemini Pro on several benchmarks! 🤯 It maintains the data efficiency of LLaVA-1.5, and LLaVA-1.6-34B is trained ~1 day with 32 A100s.
LLaVA-1.6 comes with base LLMs of different sizes: Mistral-7B, Vicuna-7B/13B, Hermes-Yi-34B. Thank you @MistralAI@lmsysorg@01AI_Yi@NousResearch
We serve LLaVA-1.6 efficiently with SGLang @lmsysorg. Thank you @lm_zheng@ying11231@shiyi_c98 for the integration.
And big shoutouts to awesome collaborators from the LLaVA team: @imhaotian@ChunyuanLi Yuheng Li @BoLi68567011 @zhang_yuanhan@shengs1123@yong_jae_lee

Large Language Models (in 2023)
An excellent summary of the research progress and developments in LLMs.
I appreciate that @hwchung27 made this content publicly available. It's a great way to catch up on some important themes like scaling and optimizing LLMs.

A new issue of Ahead of AI is out!
This month, I am covering all the LLM-related busyness on the business side (like OpenAI and Microsoft developing their own AI chips) to new ‘small’ but very capable LLMs like phi and Mistral: https://t.co/fcyRIpEib0
